Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares could depart the club after just one season, with French side Marseille interested in signing the player on loan.

The Portuguese joined Mikel Arteta’s side for just over £7 million a year ago, but struggled to maintain a regular starting spot during his first season in England and will now be allowed to leave if Arsenal can source a replacement, according to The Athletic.

The 22-year-old started just 13 Premier League games during his first season with the Gunners, with Kieran Tierney often preferred in the role.

With the defender having struggled for form, a loan move could suit all parties, with Arsenal able to let the player leave temporarily to gain regular first team football.

Tavares could be sent out on loan next season

Fellow Gunners defender William Saliba spent last season on loan with the French side and enjoyed a successful campaign, starting 36 Ligue 1 matches as they qualified for the Champions League by finishing second.

Arsenal have already been busy during the early part of the transfer window, with Matt Turner, Fabio Vieira and Marquinhos all arriving at the Emirates already.

Tavares’ only goal last season came in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United in April.
