Arsene Wenger is looking to end a 12-year wait for the Premier League title this season, and his side have started with the suggestion that they could do just that.

The Gunners have won seven of their opening 11 league games, and find themselves fourth in the table, just two points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Wenger’s side though are one of the form teams in Europe, having gone unbeaten in 15 matches dating back to that thrilling 4-3 defeat at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on the opening day of the campaign.

Arsenal have also qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with three wins and a draw from their opening four games, and will host Paris Saint-Germain in a few weeks time which will likely decide who tops Group A.

However, there will be a bit of disappointment that the Gunners couldn’t go top of the Premier League last weekend, as they were unable to get the better of North London rivals Tottenham at the Emirates, although a 1-1 draw did preserve their unbeaten run.

Nevertheless, Arsenal’s decent start has had many speculating about whether Wenger can finally win the Premier League again after 12 years, and here we have identified their best XI from the opening 11 league games…

GK – Petr Cech

One of the best goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen, Petr Cech continues to impress between the sticks.

An excellent shot-stopper with command of his area and the respect of his defenders, Cech is the shot-stopper Arsenal were crying out for for years before his arrival last year, and he’s proven in that time what an asset he is to the team by winning the Golden Glove last season.

He is the undoubted number one at the Emirates.

RB – Hector Bellerin

Spanish international Hector Bellerin has been attracting interest from Manchester City and Barcelona in the last few months, and it’s not hard to see why.

The 21-year-old has developed into an excellent right-back, and one of the quickest in the Premier League.

Defensively sound and very threatening going forward, the young full-back has all the hallmarks of going on to become a world-class right-back.

CB – Laurent Koscielny

French defender Laurent Koscielny has been improving year after year at Arsenal, and is now one of the best centre-backs in the division.

He joined Arsenal in 2010 and there were question marks about his strength and suitability for the English game, but he has been the mainstay of the Gunners back four ever since his arrival.

Although he is still prone to the odd mistake, Koscielny is a dependable centre-back for Wenger, and the main issue in recent years has been finding him a reliable centre-half partner.

Per Mertesacker has done well for Arsenal but his career is entering its final years, but Wenger may have found a perfect replacement in German international Shkodran Mustafi.

Shkodran Mustafi moved to the Emirates in the summer from Valencia, and immediately set about forming a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

And, a few months in, it looks like the could form an excellent one.

Mustafi has been excellent at times for the Gunners this season, and provided them with a steel that hasn’t always been seen from an Arsenal side.

However, he didn’t get on well in the North London derby last weekend and he did make a slight error in their previous match against Sunderland, so there are still a few question marks about his defensive prowess.

LB – Nacho Monreal

Nacho Monreal is a better defender than Kieran Gibbs, although you can’t help feel that Arsenal need to strengthen their left-back options sooner rather than later.

England international Gibbs had a chance in Monreal’s absence to stake a claim for a first team spot, but struggled against Ludogorets the other week, and didn’t do anything worthy enough to keep his place.

Monreal provides Wenger with a better defensive option at left-back and, at the age of 30, he is still doing a good job in the Premier League.

CM – Santi Cazorla

Santi Cazorla’s influence on this Arsenal team cannot be understated.

The Spanish international has been a revelation since his move to England in 2012, and has regularly been in the top two or three of the assists’ charts at the club in the last four years.

However, they certainly missed his input against Tottenham last week, with Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama able to control the midfield area at times on Sunday.

Although not as strong as the other options at the Emirates, technically Cazorla is better than any of them. He keeps the ball moving and has an incredible eye for a pass, and would work well alongside the stronger Granit Xhaka or Francis Coquelin in the midfield.

CM – Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka’s excellent performance in the North London derby, and improved displays in the matches before it, means he gets the nod over Francis Coquelin, who has struggled a bit in recent weeks.

He was impressive in the first half against Spurs, especially defensively where he broke up many attacks and kept Wanyama and Dembele on their toes.

However, he also looks good going forward, and retains the ball well and has an eye for a pass. Disciplinary issues may of concern to Wenger, but he is certainly growing into the midfield role at the Emirates.

RW – Theo Walcott

England international Theo Walcott has impressed in the first few months of the season, even more so given he was left out of the Three Lions’ Euro 2016 squad in the summer.

The 27-year-old has netted eight goals in 15 games for the Gunners so far, and is playing with the confidence that makes him a difficult winger to defend against.

With Alexis Sanchez playing more centrally, Walcott has been given the chance to shine down the right-hand-side, and he has used his pace to great effect thus far.

However, he has also shown composure throughout the season, which is something that has been lacking in the past.

A slight injury a few weeks ago would have concerned Arsenal fans, but he started the North London derby on Sunday, and could remain an important player for the Gunners this season.

CAM – Mesut Ozil

There are not many better players in the Premier League than Mesut Ozil at the moment.

The German World Cup winner has been in mesmerising form for the Gunners this season, netting three times in the league already for Wenger’s side, which is half way to his tally in last season’s Premier League.

Technically brilliant and with the ability to split defence open with one pass, Ozil will be crucial in Arsenal’s title challenge.

LW – Alex Iwobi

Although he hasn’t fired on all cylinders in the last few games, Alex Iwobi has still had a fine season thus far.

The 20-year-old has yet to net in this campaign but has laid on three assists for his teammates, but it’s his pace and trickery down the left-hand-side which has given Arsenal plenty of opportunities in the final third.

Another one who has benefitted from Sanchez’s move up top, Iwobi must continue his solid campaign, what with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the returning Aaron Ramsey waiting in the wings.

CF – Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez’s move to the more advanced role has been a revelation for Arsenal so far this season.

The Chilean has six Premier League goals from 11 matches, but has also laid on three assists for hs teammates.

And it’s this all-round ability which has seen Arsenal flourish this season.

With Sanchez upfront, Arsenal are quicker in the final third and their build-up play is sharper, with the likes of Walcott, Iwobi, and Oxlade-Chamberlain using their pace to get in behind opposition defenders.

Olivier Giroud has done well when coming off the bench, especially when the Gunners need a greater presence up front or to modify their gameplan, but he’s not going to replace Sanchez in the starting role any time soon.
