Mikel Arteta’s side moved into fourth spot with their victory at lunchtime, and Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Brentford in the evening kick-off wasn’t enough for the Lilywhites to leapfrog their north London rivals.
Bukayo Saka once again impressed for the Gunners, scoring a second penalty in as many games to double their lead, before Cristiano Ronaldo drew United back into the game.
Grant Xhaka’s long range effort secured the three points for the hosts, though, and they now hold a two-point cushion in the race for Champions League qualification.
It appears that Arteta is still unhappy with his attacking options, though, and the Spaniard is now reportedly considering a move for a former Premier League star.
According to The Daily Star, Arsenal are plotting a £50 million move for Tammy Abraham, who has impressed for Italian side Roma this term.
Abraham could be set to return to England after a single season in Italy.
The Englishman moved to the Italian capital last summer, leaving boyhood club Chelsea, and has since scored 24 goals during his first season under former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
The striker’s form has seen him heavily linked with a return to the English top flight, and it appears Arsenal are leading the race, having failed to land him 12 months ago.
The Gunners were interested in Abraham when he departed Chelsea, but Roma ultimately lured him to Italy.
The Serie A side are believed to be considering letting him leave after just one season, though, as they are aware that they could make a quick profit on a player that they paid £34 million.
Arteta is set to lose Alexandre Lacazette this summer when his contract expires and, having already sold Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, the Spaniard is keen on recruiting a proven goalscorer.
Abraham’s current deal in Italy runs until 2026, although Chelsea do have the option to re-sign him for £68 million from next summer.
