Arsene Wenger must improve these 3 things at Arsenal in January

Arsene Wenger celebrated 20 years at Arsenal earlier this month, and the Gunners boss will be hoping that his side maintain their good start to the season in a bid to lift the Premier League title.

Wenger’s men are unbeaten in their last six league games, dating back to their thrilling 4-3 defeat at home to Liverpool on the opening day, and have won their last five league matches.

An impressive win over Chelsea and a last-gasp victory at Burnley has given Arsenal fans optimism for the rest of the season, and a decent start in Europe, in which they beat Basel and drew at Paris Saint-Germain, should only increase that positivity.

However, some still feel that Arsenal are a bit short in some areas to sustain a title challenge, and as a result Wenger may be looking at potential transfer targets ready for when the window opens in the New Year.

Here are THREE things he should improve in January…

Left-back options

With Nacho Monreal into his 30s and Kieran Gibbs seemingly out-of-favour at the Emirates, Wenger may see January as a chance to bring in a long-term full-back.

The Gunners, and indeed league leaders Manchester City, have been linked with Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, who has impressed ever since breaking into the Bhoys’ first team last season.

He could even do a job for Arsenal now, such is the way he adapted to being number one left-back at Celtic Park.

Wenger has reportedly been tracking him for 18 months, and may want to improve that area of the pitch ahead of Pep Guardiola’s City by sealing a deal in January.

Forward options

Alexis Sanchez has been a revelation playing through the middle for Arsenal but, with just Olivier Giroud and the unproven Lucas Perez making up Arsenal’s forward options, this might be something Wenger needs to address.

Sanchez’s five goals, including the crucial equaliser against PSG last month, have inspired Arsenal to this great start, but there might become a point whereby he is struggling in front of goal, and it’s then up to others to lead the line.

The Gunners have been keeping an eye on FC Porto’s Andre Silva, who scored a hat-trick for Portugal the other night, and Genoa’s Leonardo Pavoletti in recent weeks, and Wenger may feel that he needs to bring one of these forwards in to improve his side.

Attacking midfield department

Arsenal are well-stocked in the attacking midfield department, but if Wenger can get a deal done for Isco, who the Gunners have been linked with recently, it would represent a potentially defining scalp.

Not only would the Spanish international hugely complement the current attackers at the club, but they are believed to be in a chase with Tottenham and Manchester City, so if Arsenal can get him ahead of the other two, it could be a huge psychological edge to take into the rest of the season.

He will also push the other attacking midfielders in the squad to keep producing their best, as they will all vie for a select few positions in Wenger’s starting eleven – this competition can only improve the Arsenal squad.
