Best XI: Permanent Premier League new boys

The Premier League season kicks off in just eight days when Liverpool welcome Norwich City to Anfield.

This summer has seen a number of players join the 20 clubs who are set to experience their first taste of England’s top-flight.

But who are the pick of the bunch in each position?

We’ve selected our Best XI Premier League new boys (excluding loan deals).

Do you agree with our selection?

Goalkeeper: Roberto

The Hammers are comfortable with Lukasz Fabianski in goal, but the loss of Adrian meant they needed to find a suitable backup for the Poland star and, after arriving on a free, Roberto will be just that.

Having spent the majority of his playing career at various La Liga clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza and Malaga, the Spaniard spent the last three years on the books of Espanyol, though only managed to make 12 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Right-back: James Justin

James Justin appeared for Luton 43 times in the league last year, helping them to finish top of League One and achieve back-to-back promotions to the Championship.

The 21-year-old established himself as a fixture in the starting line-up and played well enough to catch the eye of Foxes boss, Brendan Rodgers, who was impressed enough to offer him a five-year deal at the King Power Stadium.

Centre-back: Matt Clarke

After narrowly avoiding the drop last season, Brighton are hoping to finish above the bottom-three again this year and signing young English centre-back Matt Clarke from Portsmouth could help them to achieve that.

The 22-year-old started all 46 league games for the south-coast side last season, and was even given the captain’s armband on numerous occasions throughout his time at Fratton Park.

New Seagulls boss Graham Potter will hope the Ipswich Town academy product can bring the form that saw him selected in the League One Team of the Season last year.

Centre-back: Bjorn Engels

Premier League new boys Aston Villa have made the most new signings as they try and avoid going straight back down to the Championship, including Bjorn Engels from Stade Reims.

The 24-year-old, who has been linked with Arsenal in the past, spent just a season with the French outfit, but he started 33 of their 36 league games to help them finish eighth in Ligue 1.

Villa boss Dean Smith will hope Engels will play a big part in the Villans’ first season back in the top-flight since they were relegated in 2016.

Left-back: Lloyd Kelly

After impressing in performances for Bristol City in the Championship last season, Lloyd Kelly earned himself a move to the Premier League.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe decided to part with £13million to secure the services of the young full-back who’s expected to be a regular in the side.

The 20-year-old made 32 league appearances for the Robins last season, helping them to finish in eighth spot, their highest finish since 2008.

Midfielder: Tanguy Ndombele

After two transfer windows with no activity, Tottenham fans finally got the big signing they were waiting for when Tanguy Ndombele arrived for a club-record £55million.

The 22-year-old’s seven assists in 34 league appearances helped Lyon reach third spot in Ligue 1.

Also impressing in the Champions League, the France international contributed with two important goals in the group stages.

France boss Didier Deschamps gave the centre-midfielder his international debut in November and he has gone on to make five more appearances for Les Bleus since.

Midfielder: Rodri

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City made a big splash with their second signing of the summer, as they brought in Rodri for £62.8million.

The sitting midfielder became a regular in the Atletico Madrid first-team in 2017/18 and built on that last term as he helped Diego Simeone’s side finish above their more famous city rivals for the second year running.

Making his debut for the Spain national team last March, the 23-year-old has now earned seven caps for La Roja.

Winger: Daniel James

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first move of the summer was to pick up young winger Daniel James from Swansea City.

The 21-year-old performed well in the Championship for the Welsh club last time out, clocking up four goals and nine assists and helping them to finish in 10th.

Red Devils fans are already getting excited about the Wales international, who has been compared with club legend and national team manager Ryan Giggs, after his impressive pre-season performances.

Winger: Nicolas Pepe

Although yet not totally finalised, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has got fans excited by closing in on the signing of Nicolas Pepe in a £72million deal from French outfit Lille.

The winger was a standout performer for Les Dogues last season, chipping in with 22 goals and 11 assists to help them reach second place in Ligue 1.

Gunner fans will hope the addition of the 24-year-old will help them to finish in the top-four of the Premier League for the first time since 2016.

Striker: Sebastien Haller

Having impressed last season for German side Frankurt, Sebastien Haller has made the switch to the Premier League, signing with West Ham United.

Hammer boss Manuel Pellegrini is aiming to have a successful second season with the London club and will hope the addition of the 25-year-old will help him achieve that.

The Frenchman finished last season with 15 league goals for Die Adler, helping them to reach sixth spot in the Bundesliga.

Striker: Joelinton

In a summer full of drama for Newcastle, the club-record signing of young forward Joelinton may have gone under the radar for many fans.

However, expectations are high for the 22-year-old, who chipped in with seven goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga for Hoffenheim last season, despite missing multiple games late in the campaign due to injury.

The Brazilian helped Die Kraichgauer reach 11th position in the German top flight and is a player who will excite the Toon Army faithful.
