Bilic should drop these 3 West Ham United players against Arsenal

West Ham United went out of the League Cup on Wednesday night following a disappointing 4-1 defeat away at Manchester United.

The Hammers had drawn at Old Trafford in the Premier League last weekend and would have taken confidence from their performance into their quarter-final clash, but Slaven Bilic’s side were comfortably beaten by Jose Mourinho’s men.

The result means that West Ham have won none of their last five matches in all competitions, and go to Arsenal on Saturday seeking a much-needed three points.

Bilic’s men are currently 16th in the table having won just three of their opening 13 league games, but have not won in the Premier League since their 1-0 success over bottom of the table Sunderland on October 22.

That was the second of back-to-back victories for the Hammers, who beat Crystal Palace a week earlier, but that is about as good as it’s got for the East London club, although they did get the better of Chelsea in the last round of the League Cup.

Nevertheless, it’s not been the start to the season, and indeed the new era at the London Stadium, that Hammers fans would have been hoping for, and they’ll look to Bilic to try and get things right on the pitch, starting at home to Arsenal on Saturday.

The West Ham boss gave a few players a chance on Wednesday at Old Trafford, but here are THREE players who got on the pitch against United who should not start against the Gunners on Saturday…

Sofiane Feghouli

Algerian international Sofiane Feghouli came into the West Ham starting line-up against United on Wednesday, which was his first start for the club since their 1-0 win over Accrington back on September 21.

And it was pretty clear why he hasn’t been involved in and around the first team much since then in his display at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old offered a bit going forward in what was a solid first half display from the Hammers, but he failed to make the necessary impact in the second half when the visitors went behind.

Feghouli came in during the summer amongst much optimism, but he has thus far failed to deliver, and won’t get near the starting line-up on Saturday.

Adrian

Darren Randolph has deposed Adrian in the West Ham goal in recent weeks, but the Spaniard was given an opportunity to show Bilic what he can do against United on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old has arguably been one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the Premier League over the last few years, and played a big part in helping the Hammers finish seventh last season.

However, he was also part of a West Ham backline that struggled at the start of this campaign, and was eventually dropped in favour of Randolph against Tottenham a fortnight ago.

And, although Adrian couldn’t be blamed for any of United’s four goals, he didn’t do enough on the night to suggest that he warrants a start ahead of Randolph on Saturday, and he was lucky to stay on the pitch after a nasty tackle on Zlatan Ibrahimovic went unpunished.

Adrian will have to remain the back-up shot-stopper for a little while longer.

Arthur Masuaku

Although Arthur Masuaku didn’t start on Wednesday night, he replaced the injured Aaron Cresswell at half-time at Old Trafford, and thus played a decent chunk of the contest.

The 23-year-old returned from a knee injury on Wednesday night, and could now be set to deputise for Cresswell at left-back should the England international be ruled out for Saturday’s game.

However, it looks more likely that Edimilson Fernandes will come into the wing-back role as, although both are defensively suspect, Fernandes has had more minutes on the pitch and had more of an impact in that role so far this season.

It’s harsh on the returning Masuaku, as he started the season reasonably well, but a bit more time may be needed for the 23-year-old to get back to full fitness.
