Bilic should give these 3 West Ham players a chance v Man United

West Ham travel to Manchester United for the second time in four days on Wednesday, this time though for a League Cup quarter-final clash.

Slaven Bilic’s side held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Sunday, a result which moved them up a place to 16th in the table.

The deserved point from an encouraging performance will please West Ham fans who haven’t had much to cheer so far this season, with their side recording just three league victories from their first 13 games.

However, ever since Bilic implemented a back three against Crystal Palace last month, West Ham have looked more solid and carry a greater goal threat, and in Dimitri Payet, they have one of the most talented players in the top-flight.

They turn their attentions to the League Cup this week though, and they’ll look to back up last round’s impressive 2-1 win over Chelsea with victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Hammers have never won the League Cup, but they could take a massive step towards finally lifting the trophy by getting the better of Jose Mourinho’s United tomorrow evening.

With an important home game against Arsenal on Saturday, Bilic may make a few changes to his starting eleven against United, so here are THREE players who deserve a chance on Wednesday…

Edimilson Fernandes

He scored what turned out to be the winner against Chelsea in the last round and, alongside an impressive performance against the Blues, Edimilson Fernandes deserves a chance on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old excelled in the right wing-back role against Antonio Conte’s side, getting up and down the flank energetically throughout the 120 minutes.

Including him in the starting eleven could give Michail Antonio more licence to get forward, which could seriously benefit a West Ham side struggling to put the ball in the back of the net.

Fernandes has made eight appearances for the Hammers since his move to East London in the summer, and two of these have been in the League Cup. His previous performances in the competition should earn him a start against United on Wednesday.

Havard Nordtveit

West Ham looked stronger in the midfield since they went to three at the back, and it also saw Havard Nordtveit’s game time significantly reduce.

The 26-year-old, who signed on a free in the summer, has started four times for the Hammers in the Premier League this season, but all them were prior to the system change made by Bilic.

Since then, he’s been restricted to just two substitute appearances in the league and, although he has struggled in his first few months in England, Hammers boss Bilic will need to know whether Nordtveit is up to it should he be called upon in the first team.

Only minutes on the pitch against a strong side will give him that knowledge.

Ashley Fletcher

West Ham have scored just 14 league goals so far this season and, although that’s not the worse record in the Premier League, it’s a concern when your strikers have scored just one of them.

Diafra Sakho is the only forward to net for the club in this campaign, and that came in the draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

With Simone Zaza struggling to adapt to the English game, Ashley Fletcher may get an opportunity to stake his claim for a first team place.

The 21-year-old signed from United in the summer, but has made just one start for the Hammers so far, and that was in their 3-1 defeat at Manchester City back in August.

How he’d love to get a start against his former club, who never played him, on Wednesday.
