Career in pictures – Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler celebrates his 42nd birthday today, so everyone here at Shoot! would like to wish the former England international many happy returns.

The forward worked his way up through the ranks at Anfield to make his senior debut in 1993, and then went on to win two League Cups, an FA Cup, and the UEFA Cup in his first stint on Merseyside.

The 42-year-old then moved to Leeds in 2001 and spent 18 months at Elland Road, before signing for Manchester City in the winter of 2003, where he would then go on and play 92 times for the Citizens and netted 28 goals before rejoining Liverpool in the summer of 2005.

Fowler would then add a further 39 appearances and 12 goals to his already stunning tally in a Reds shirt, and when he left Anfield in the summer of 2007, he had played 369 games for the club, scoring a staggering 183 goals.

Spells at Cardiff and Blackburn followed before he moved to Australia to play in the A-League with North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory, before ending his club career in Thailand with Muangthong United in 2011.

Fowler officially ended his playing career in 2015 with 590 appearances and 253 goals, as well as 26 caps for England, in which time he netted seven goals.

So, with it being the striker’s 42nd birthday today, we at Shoot! thought we’d take a look back at Fowler’s career in pictures…

Liverpool debut (September 1993)

Fowler came up through the youth ranks at Anfield, and made his senior debut for the club back in September 1993, netting in their 3-1 victory over Fulham in the League Cup.

He went on to net 12 goals in 28 Premiership games in his first season at Liverpool, and with six goals in five League Cup matches, he made quite the impression in his early days at Anfield.

Here, Fowler can be seen netting one of his five goals in the second leg victory over Fulham, a match they won 8-1 on aggregate, only to lose to Wimbledon in the fourth round.

First trophy (League Cup 1995)

Fowler then embarked on a stunning season at Anfield in 1994/95, scoring 25 goals in just 42 league games to help Roy Evans’ men to fourth place in the Premiership.

And 1995 saw the 42-year-old pick up his first major trophy at the club, as he helped the Reds clinch the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.

Steve McManaman netted a brace to see off the Trotters that day, but Fowler’s four goals in eight matches, including both in the 2-0 aggregate win over Crystal Palace in the semi-finals, were a key reason for their success.

England debut (March 1996)

Fowler earned his first England cap back in March 1996, coming on as a substitute in their 1-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley.

The striker would then go on to make a further 25 appearances for his country, netting seven times overall, the last of which coming in a 2-2 draw with Cameroon back in May 2002.

Most prolific campaign (1995/96)

Fowler’s most prolific season at Liverpool came in the 1995/96 campaign, in which time he netted 36 goals in 53 games for Evans’ men.

28 of those strikes came in the Premiership as the Reds secured a third place finish, and he also scored six goals in seven FA Cup games, although couldn’t prevent the Merseyside club losing 1-0 to rivals Manchester United in the final.

Winning the Treble (2001)

Injury kept Fowler out for much of the 1997/98 season and had a few frustrating years at Anfield prior to the 2000/01 campaign.

But this one was a great one, as the 42-year-old helped Liverpool secure the treble by winning the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup, netting 17 goals in all competitions.

His six goals in five matches helped him win a second League Cup title, beating Birmingham City in the final at Wembley; he netted in their FA Cup semi-final victory over Wycombe a few months later; and then the fourth in their thrilling 5-4 win over Alaves in the UEFA Cup final.

Leeds and Man City

Fowler ended his 17-year association with Liverpool by moving to Leeds in the summer of 2001, where he would go on to net 14 goals in 33 games over two seasons at Elland Road.

He then made the move to Manchester City in 2003, and although his first two campaigns weren’t anything to write home about, the forward scored 12 goals in 33 matches in the 2004/05 season as the Citizens finished eighth in the Premier League.

Return to Anfield (2006)

Fowler returned to Liverpool in January 2006 much to the delight of the Reds supporters, given it was over four a half years since he left them for Leeds.

The 42-year-old went on to net 12 goals in 39 appearances in his second spell, including seven in the 2006/07 season.

Here, Fowler is seen celebrating his first goal on return to the club in a 5-1 victory over Fulham in March 2006.

End of career and retirement

Fowler left Liverpool for good in the summer of 2007, signing for Cardiff City and spending a season there before moving to Blackburn Rovers a year later.

However, he made just six appearances for the Lancashire-based side before leaving England for North Queensland Fury, where he netted nine goals in 26 games before signing for fellow Australia A-League side Perth Glory in 2010.

His final club was Thailand’s Muangthong United, where he scored four goals in 20 matches before leaving in February 2012.

He officially announced his retirement in January 2015 after 590 club appearances over 18 years, netting a stunning 253 goals.

Here, Fowler is seen training ahead of Cardiff’s FA Cup final against Portsmouth in 2008 and, although he was included in the matchday squad, he didn’t appear for the Bluebirds in their 1-0 loss to the South Coast outfit.
