After falling to a 4-0 thrashing at home to fierce rivals Barcelona on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid struck back with a 4-3 win away to Shakhtar Donetsk. Although the Ukrainians scored three late goals, Ronaldo had already struck for the 83rd and 84th time in the Champions League, plus assisted Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal to seal top spot in Group A for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Luis Enrique’s side carried their blistering performance at the Bernabeu into their home meeting with Roma, thrashing the Serie A side 6-1 at the Camp Nou. Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, who was starting his first match for two months after returning from injury, both scored braces, whilst Gerard Pique and Adriano also got their names on the scoresheet. The holders certainly look well placed to become the first team to ever successfully defend the Champions League crown.
