Chelsea’s 2016-17 Naughty or Nice list

Chelsea are six points clear at the top of the Premier League at Christmas after winning their last 11 league matches.

Antonio Conte’s side beat Hull 2-0 on October 1, but little did they know that almost three months on, they have yet to drop a point since that victory at the KCOM Stadium.

Their 11th win on the trot came at Crystal Palace last weekend, with Diego Costa’s 13th goal of the campaign proving to be enough to see off Alan Pardew’s side at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool’s victory at Everton means that the gap is down to six points between them and Conte’s side, but the Blues will hope to extend that further when they take on Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

It has been a remarkable transformation from a side that were eighth in the table and eight points behind leaders Manchester City on September 24, as they are now firm favourites to regain their Premier League title.

In what has been a wonderful first half of the season at Stamford Bridge, we thought we’d take a look back and review Chelsea’s campaign, and evaluate which players have done well, and which ones need to improve in 2017.

Thus, here are the Chelsea players on the naughty and nice lists this Christmas…

NICE – Diego Costa

Not the most popular player in English football, but Diego Costa has rediscovered his goal-scoring form under Conte this season.

The Spaniard has scored 13 times in the Premier League so far, and has failed to score in just five of Chelsea’s 17 league matches.

The 28-year-old had a frustrating season last time out, netting just 12 times in the league, yet this time around has looked and performed like the menacing forward that helped the Blues win the title in 2015.

His link-up play with Eden Hazard and Pedro has been sensational, and his form, and crucially his fitness, will have a big say in whether Chelsea go on to win the title this season.

NAUGHTY – Branislav Ivanovic

Branislav Ivanovic was one of a few Chelsea defenders that didn’t cover themselves in glory at the start of the season.

The Serbia international was part of the Blues defence that underperformed in the first few games – at one stage they conceded seven goals in three games, and were completely outplayed by Arsenal back in September.

Since then, Ivanovic has not started a game for Chelsea, and in that time they have won 11 straight league matches, and conceded just twice in that time.

With his contract up in the summer, it’s unlikely that his eight-year stay at Stamford Bridge will continue past the end of the season.

NICE – Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard has been back to his best this season after a torrid time last term.

The Belgian international looked slow and lacklustre for much of last season, and scored just four Premier League goals for the Blues in their horrendous title defence.

However, the 25-year-old has returned to those 2014/15 heights and indeed gone beyond them so far this season. He surpassed last season’s tally on October 30 against Sunderland, and reached nine goals by Christmas, two more than at the same stage two years ago.

His form has been destructive, with arguably his best display coming in their 5-0 thumping of Everton last month, where he was simply sensational.

The understanding between him and Costa has been first-class, and more of that will likely see Chelsea crowned champions come May.

NAUGHTY – Oscar

Oscar had a chance to nail down a place in Conte’s plans at the start of the season, but the Brazilian international didn’t do anywhere near enough to justify a regular starting berth.

The 25-year-old contributed just one assist in five Premier League starts up to and including the 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool on September 16, and since then has played just 35 minutes of league action for the Blues.

Hazard’s great form and Pedro’s decent run in the side hasn’t made it easy for him to get back into the team, but Oscar didn’t show enough in the early stages to warrant a place upfront.

A move away in January is likely.

NICE – David Luiz

Several players could be on this list. The likes of Victor Moses, N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic all deserve praise, but David Luiz’s efforts this season have stunned almost everybody.

His move back to Chelsea at the end of the transfer window looked like nothing more than a panic buy from Conte as a result of missing out on his main targets, but it has actually turned out to be a blessing, because Luiz has excelled at the heart of his three-man defence.

The Brazilian international has never been regarded as the best defender, but this season he has improved wholesome in that department, and the responsibility of playing in the middle of the back three seems to be bringing the best out of him.

Luiz has so far been the commanding centre-back Chelsea need to win the title, and he has set himself up to have a stellar 2017.
