Chelsea’s top 3 games of 2016

Chelsea will top the Premier League table going into 2017 regardless of how they get on against Stoke on New Year’s Eve.

Antonio Conte’s side have won their last 12 league games in a row, the latest of which was a comfortable 3-0 success over Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

It means that the Blues are six points clear of second place Liverpool going into the final round of fixtures of 2016, where Conte’s men will host Mark Hughes’ Stoke, who got beat 4-1 by Liverpool on Tuesday.

Chelsea will look for their 16th league win of the season at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, and victory would put them within one of the longest winning-streak in the Premier League, which is currently held by Arsenal when they won 14 consecutive games back in 2002.

The Blues will be confident of recording another win when the Potters come to West London on Saturday which would cap off an excellent second half of 2016.

And, with the year coming to a close, we thought we’d look back at Chelsea’s 2016, and have thus selected their top THREE games from the year…

Chelsea 3-0 Leicester (October 15)

There were still a few question marks surrounding Conte and Chelsea when champions Leicester visited them back in October, but they soon banished any concerns with a faultless display.

The Blues had just beaten Hull 2-0 in their first game playing with a back three, and their first home match using that system saw them sweep aside Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard both netted in the first half for the hosts, before the reborn Victor Moses sealed the victory ten minutes from time.

It was an utterly dominant performance from Conte’s men, and a clear message to their title rivals about their credentials ahead of the season.

Just a week after dispatching Leicester, Chelsea welcomed Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge ten months after sacking him.

The Portuguese boss returned with his Manchester United side struggling for consistency in the league, having won just one of their preceding five matches, and they found themselves behind after just 30 seconds when Pedro got the better of David De Gea.

It set the tone for a sensational performance from Chelsea, who doubled their lead 20 minutes later through Gary Cahill, and then made it three when Eden Hazard finished off a fine move 17 minutes into the second half.

The excellent N’Golo Kante made it four eight minutes later in what was a ruthlessly excellent display from Conte’s side, who at the time went up to fourth in the table.

The new 3-4-3 system appeared to be paying dividends for the Blues, and they haven’t looked back since.

Chelsea 5-0 Everton (November 5)

Chelsea beat Southampton 2-0 to make it four wins in a row before Everton visited Stamford Bridge, and what was to follow was arguably one of the best Premier League performances ever.

Conte’s side completely blew away the Toffees back in November, with Eden Hazard’s brace inspiring the Blues to a crushing 5-0 success over Ronald Koeman’s helpless side.

The Belgian gave the hosts the lead after 19 minutes before summer signing Marcos Alonso made it two a minute later.

Diego Costa scored the third just before half time, before Hazard finished an outstanding move to net his second and Chelsea’s fourth 11 minutes into the second half.

Pedro scored the fifth nine minutes later in what was a simply incredible display from Conte’s side, and one that took them top of the Premier League.
