Leeds United have boosted their promotion chances after a 1-0 victory against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Chris Wood continued his impressive goalscoring form as he grabbed the only goal of the game – his 20th Championship goal this season.

The Owls had a penalty saved in the second-half, after Jordan Rhodes’ low strike was equalled by a fantastic diving save from veteran goalkeeper Rob Green.

The win moves United three points clear of their local rivals and up to fourth in the Championship table.

After the game, Leeds manager Garry Monk was proud of his side’s performance.

He said, “They managed the pressure very well and we took another step forward.

“To score the goal, keep a clean sheet and get the three points is the most important outcome for us.”

Wednesday’s poor record at Elland Road continued, having not won on Leeds’ turf since March 2007.

Manager Carlos Carvalhal felt that his side played well, despite the disappointing result, “We came here to play positive and to try and play our football and I think we played well,” he said.

“We made one mistake, and Leeds scored from it.”
