Conte should give these 3 Chelsea players a chance against Arsenal

Premier League leaders Chelsea host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (12.30pm kick-off) looking to go 12 points clear at the top.

Antonio Conte’s men drew 1-1 at title rivals Liverpool on Tuesday to open up a nine-point lead at the summit, with the likes of Tottenham and indeed Arsenal failing to take advantage.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs could only muster a draw away at Sunderland, while Arsene Wenger’s Gunners lost 2-1 at home to Watford.

It means that victory for the Blues this weekend would all but end Arsenal’s title challenge, given that they would be 12 points behind Conte’s men with just 15 matches to go.

Chelsea’s form since they were thumped 3-0 by Arsenal back in September has been sensational, as they have won 15 of their 17 Premier League matches, losing only the once to Tottenham at the start of January.

It’s a run of form that has seen them become heavy favourites to regain the title this season, and they’ll go in search of a 19th victory of the campaign on Saturday.

However, having played on Tuesday against Liverpool, Conte may make a few changes to his starting eleven, so here are THREE players who deserve a chance against the Gunners on Saturday…

Kurt Zouma

Having played against Liverpool on Tuesday, Conte could rotate his squad against the Gunners, so one man that could be in line for a start is defender Kurt Zouma.

The 22-year-old hasn’t featured in the Premier League for the Blues since February of last year when he sustained a nasty knee injury against Manchester United, and subsequently spent nine months on the sidelines before returning in a development match last November.

Since then, Zouma has stepped up his rehabilitation by playing the full 90 minutes in both of Chelsea’s FA Cup victories last month, but he is still yet to feature in the league for Conte’s men this term.

However, Conte could give him an opportunity against Arsenal, especially if any of the back three are carrying knocks following the draw at Liverpool on Tuesday.

Cesc Fabregas

N’Golo Kante was outstanding for the Blues in their draw against Liverpool on Tuesday, so is a shoe-in to start against the Gunners on Saturday.

However, the other central midfield position could be up for grabs, especially given Conte’s recent rotation between Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in that role.

Matic did well in the centre against the Reds, but with Arsenal likely to have to field youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the middle, Fabregas’ technical ability and greater forward presence could be invaluable on Saturday.

The Spanish international has started just five times in the league this season and, alongside nine other substitute appearances, has registered six assists, with his last start in the 4-2 win over Stoke seeing him grab two assists for the Blues.

Thus, he could get the nod against his former club on Saturday.

Pedro

Spanish international Pedro was dropped in favour of Willian in the draw with Liverpool on Tuesday, yet his form this season has been too good to ignore and it might see him recalled on Saturday.

The 29-year-old has scored five goals and laid on five assists in 20 Premier League appearances this term, although it has been in the FA Cup where he has been great recently, having netted a brace and got an assist in the 4-1 win over Peterborough, before scoring one and assisting another in the 4-0 thumping of Brentford last weekend.

Obviously, the calibre of those opponents are not comparable to Arsenal, yet Pedro is clearly in good form in front of goal, and Willian didn’t really do enough against Liverpool to suggest that he’s nailed down a starting berth.

Thus, Pedro could well return to the starting eleven on Saturday.
