Did You Know? 5 facts about Borussia Dortmund and England sensation Jadon Sancho

Borussia Dortmund have a mountain to climb when they welcome Tottenham to Germany on Tuesday night.

The Bundesliga leaders trail 3-0 after Spurs’ rampant second-half performance at Wembley has all but sealed Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s place in the last-eight.

However, the Argentine boss will be well aware that the tie isn’t completely over yet, with the Westfalenstadion one of the most intimidating places to visit in Europe.

If Die Borussen are to pull off the unlikely then they will ironically look to a Londoner to help spearhead their comeback.

Aged just 18, Jadon Sancho has been one of the stars of the season on the continent, notching nine goals and 11 assists as Dortmund battle it out with Bayern Munich for the title.

Previously at Manchester City, the forward has also been handed his senior England debut this season and looks an exciting prospect for the Three Lions moving forward.

World Champion

Then at Manchester City, Sancho was part of the England Under-17s squad which one the World Cup in India in 2017. However, after scoring three goals in the group stage, he wasn’t involved in any of the knockout matches (or the celebrations above) after Dortmund recalled him. The German side wanted him to be part of their preparations for a Champions League qualifier against APOEL Nicosia.

Jadon the Hornet

Before Dortmund and Man City, Sancho started his footballing journey at Watford. The forward joined the Hornets at the age of seven and he was there for seven years until it was too hard to resist a move away. Chelsea and Arsenal were also interested but the Cityzens convinced him to continue his development away from the capital.

Southwark Star 

In 2011, Sancho represented Southwark’s London Youth Games Under-11s team. A friend by the name of Reiss Nelson – who is on the books at Arsenal but also currently plying his trade in Germany on loan at Hoffenheim – was and teammate. Unsurprisingly, with two players that have now represented England at various age groups in the side, Southwark won the tournament.

Not many players, especially those in their teenage years, would dare turn their back on Pep Guardiola, but that’s what Jadon Sancho did in 2017. The Spanish chief was expecting his exciting prospect to arrive at be on the plane for their pre-season tour of the USA but the forward informed his boss that he would not be signing a new contract with the club. Sancho stayed at home with the youth team as City tried hard to persuade him to stay. But, as we now know, he signed for Dortmund for £8million later that summer.

Young Lion

You know Sancho made his England debut last year but do you know where he ranks on the list of the youngest ever Three Lions players? Well after coming on against Croatia in the Nations League at 18 years and 201 days he ranks at number 9. At 17 years and 75 days, Theo Walcott holds that record. Sancho is though the first to be born in the 2000s to represent the seniors.
