Doubles, downfalls and debates: The best and worst of Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put pen to paper on a fresh deal at The Emirates which is set to be announced tomorrow (Wednesday), despite having endured a season in which he himself described the lack of respect as “disgusting,” according to reports from the Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson.

Wenger arrived at Arsenal in 1996 as an unknown quantity in the English game, but it didn’t take long for the Frenchman to make his mark when he secured the Gunners a domestic double in the 1997/98 season setting him on his way to ten major titles, which accounts for a third of all major honours at the club.

The brand new contract extension may come as a surprise to some, despite the recent FA Cup final victory over London rivals Chelsea. A season littered with persistent fan protests as well as the club failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years were both major contributions towards the doubt over the 67-year-old’s future.

Having confirmed a deal which could well take his tenure into a 23rd year, here at Shoot! we thought we’d take a look back at some of his biggest moments and top quotes as Arsenal boss…

1996 – Arrival

On shaking things up in the changing room:

“I changed a few habits (of the players), which isn’t easy in a team where the average age is 30 years. At the first match the players were chanting ‘we want our Mars bars’. Then, at half-time I asked my physio Gary Lewin: ‘Nobody is talking, what’s wrong with them?’ and he replied: ‘They are hungry’. I hadn’t given them their chocolate before the game. It was funny.”

1997/98 – The first double

Arsene Wenger on the title race after beating Manchester United: “I told you last week that the race was not over when the bookmakers stopped betting. Surprise, surprise, they have started taking money again.”

2001/02 – Double Double winners

Arsene Wenger on Sir Alex Ferguson’s criticism of Arsenal: “Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home.”

2003/04 – Invincibles

Arsene Wenger: “Nobody will finish above us in the league. It wouldn’t surprise me if we were to go unbeaten for the whole of the season.” Ridiculed for this comment in 2002 but the Arsenal boss had the last laugh as his team finished the season unbeaten in the 2003/04 season. (P38 – W26 – D12 – L0).

2005/06 – The Champions League final

Arsene Wenger following the 2-1 defeat to Barcelona: “It was the referee’s fault.”

2014 – The 1000th game

Arsenal lost 6-0 to Mourinho’s Chelsea in Wenger’s 1000th game, the two managers have always had a sour relationship.

Wenger, 2005, after the Portuguese foreman labelled him a voyeur: “He’s out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful. When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes and not more intelligent.”

More Fueds

Wenger has clashed with a few Premier League managers over the years, none more so than Tony Pulis.

Here the Frenchman has clearly had enough of Pulis’ style…

“You cannot say it is football any more.

“It is more rugby on the goalkeepers than football. When you see the way Shawcross kicked Heurelho Gomes, how Robert Huth pushed Gomes in the goal, you cannot say that is football anymore.”

2017 – Record breaker

Arsenal’s win over Chelsea at the weekend put Wenger into the lead for FA Cup wins as a manager with seven.

Arsene Wenger: “For once I have kept my medal, that means it’s a special night for me.”
