EFL: Championship, League One, League Two Players and Managers of Midweek – Big wins for Norwich, Burton and Exeter

The Football League hosted another full midweek fixture list as teams from the Championship, League One and League Two continued what has been a relentless schedule.

In all 35 matches were played across all three divisions which proved both entertaining and as unpredictable as ever.

With the amount of coverage given to the Premier League, we thought it would be nice to also give recognition to those star performers amongst the 72 EFL clubs.

So after much deliberation, here are our players and managers of the week in the Championship, League One and League Two…

League Two

Player: Ryan Bowman (Exeter City)

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Oldham at the weekend, Exeter City bounced back in style with a big 6-1 win over Colchester United. There were a number of star performers for the Grecians with the likes of Matt Jay and Joel Randall all shining. However, we have opted to go for Bowman, 28, who notched his first career hat-trick. The striker’s goals all came in the second half as Exeter moved up to fifth in the table.

Manager: Ian Holloway (Grimsby Town)

It would’ve been easy to give this to Exeter’s Matt Taylor but we thought that we’d go elsewhere and pick Grimsby’s Ian Holloway. The main reason for it is because the Mariners picked themsleves up from a 5-0 thrashing at the weekend to secure a 2-1 win at Crawley Town. The three points – in which Town showed great character – lifted the club four clear of the drop zone.

League One

Player: Josh Magennis (Hull City)

Hull have made a flying start to the season as they look to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking. On Tuesday, the Tigers secured an impressive 3-0 win at fellow promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town. Striker Josh Magennis was a handful for the Tractor Boys’ defence all night and made some key contributions. After heading the ball away from under his own crossbar, the Northern Ireland international converted his side’s second goal in the second half.

Manager: Jake Buxton (Burton Albion)

Having just won once all season prior to Tuesday, the last team Burton would’ve wanted to face was a Charlton Athletic side unbeaten in seven. However, the form book was turned on its head as Jake Buxton oversaw a huge 4-2 win for his side. Not only was it the Brewers first victory since September, it also took them off the bottom of the table and into 22nd.

Championship

Player: Ben Brereton (Blackburn Rovers)

Blackburn Rovers registered an emphatic 3-0 win at Preston North End, extending their unbeaten run to four matches. Their star man – and our Championship star man – was Ben Brereton. The 21-year-old striker kept the Preston defenders busy throughout the night with his movement. On 53 minutes he slotted home his third goal of the season before, 23 minutes later, superbly setting up substitute Tyrhys Dolan for his third assist of the campaign.

Player: Daniel Farke (Norwich City)

It’s not always easy for teams relegated from the Premier League to pick themsleves back up and go again but Daniel Farke has got Norwich City flying in the Championship. The German guided his side to a third win in a row which stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches with a 3-2 win at Stoke City. The Canaries were 3-0 up and survived a late charge from the hosts to stay a point clear at the top of the table.
