England manager Roy Hodgson has announced that he has resigned from his position following his side’s embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Iceland in their Euro 2016 round of 16 tie in Nice.

The Three Lions had been overwhelming favourites to reach a quarter-final tie against a nation with a population of just 330,000, but despite taking an early lead through a Wayne Rooney penalty, England found themselves 2-1 behind before the 20th minute and showed few signs of ever getting back into the game on the French Riviera.

Despite winning all ten of their matches in qualification for the tournament in France, Hodgson’s team struggled in the group, drawing against Russia and Slovakia, before their abysmal performance against Iceland.

Hodgson was in charge for four years and won 33 of his 56 matches charge, but he was successful in just three of his 11 matches at major tournaments, as England exited at the group stage in the 2014 World Cup without winning a game.
