With Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho having starred in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, there’s been a trend of top English talent looking to develop their game on the continent.
Noni Madueke is another Englishman currently shining abroad, with the winger becoming a regular figure for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.
The 19-year-old was born in Barnet and spent time with Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before opting to move to Holland in 2018.
In doing so, the attacker rejected a transfer to Manchester United and, in an interview with BBC Sport, he explained why he turned down a switch to Old Trafford.
“Chelsea, Manchester United, a lot of European clubs [made offers],” Madueke said.
“I came here one time and as soon as I came I wanted to sign straight away. I knew going from Tottenham to United is pretty much the same thing.
“The reason I wanted to go was to progress quicker into the first team. PSV is a top European club. It made so much sense at the time and it makes sense now.”
Now an England Under-21 international with 50 senior career matches under his belt, it’s hard to argue with Madueke.
