It all began more than a year ago on September 7, 2014 with 53 teams, but we have finally reached the final fixtures in the qualifying process for Euro 2016 next summer.
A number of nations have already surprisingly booked their trip to France – Iceland, Wales and Northern Ireland spring to mind – but who else has qualified, and what are the permutations ahead of the last match day?
We take a look at the current situation and what could happen in the remaining games…
Who’s through?
20 teams – France, England, Czech Republic, Iceland, Austria, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Wales, Romania, Albania, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Croatia, Turkey.
Who is guaranteed a play-off spot?
8 teams – Hungary, Denmark, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Ukraine, Slovenia, Norway, Bosnia.
Round-up
Group A
– Czech Republic finished top of the group after beating the Netherlands 3-2.
– Iceland finished second after their late 1-0 defeat to Turkey.
– Turkey’s last minute winner, coupled with Kazakhstan’s win in Latvia means that they qualify as the best third-placed team, while the Netherlands are out.
– Latvia finished bottom of the group.
Group B
– Belgium won the group.
– Wales finished second to qualify for their first major tournament since 1958.
– Bosnia & Herzegovina will be in the play-offs after their 3-2 win in Cyprus.
– Andorra finished bottom with 10 defeats from 10 games.
Group C
– Spain have won the group.
– Slovakia grabbed second and automatic qualification after beating Luxembourg 4-2 in their final match.
– Ukraine are in the play-offs and can’t be the best third-placed side.
– Macedonia finished bottom of the group after they failed to win in Belarus.
Group D
– Germany have won the group.
– Poland finished second after they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1.
– Republic of Ireland will be in the play-offs as they can’t be the best third-placed side.
– Gibraltar finished bottom, losing all ten of their matches.
Group E
– England are the group winners with a 100% record.
– Switzerland finished second to qualify automatically, while Slovenia finished third and will be in the play-offs as they can’t be the best third-placed team.
– San Marino finished bottom
Group F
– Northern Ireland have won the group.
– Romania have also qualified automatically after finishing second.
– Hungary are guaranteed a play-off spot, but they will also be the best third-placed team if Ukraine fail to beat Spain, if Turkey fail to win, if Turkey win and Kazakhstan don’t beat Latvia, and if Slovakia avoid defeat against Luxembourg.
– Greece finished bottom of the group despite beating Hungary 4-3 in their final match.
Group G
– Austria have won the group.
– Russia beat Montenegro in their final match to finish second qualify automatically.
– Sweden will be in the play-offs as they can’t be the best third-placed side.
– Moldova finished bottom.
Group H
– Italy have won the group.
– Croatia won in Malta to finish second and qualify automatically.
– Norway’s 2-1 defeat in Italy means they will be in the play-offs.
– Malta finished bottom.
Group I
– Portugal have won the group.
– Albania finished second and will be going to France after they beat Armenia 3-0 in their final match.
– Denmark will be in the play-offs and cannot be the best third-placed team.
– Armenia finished bottom of the group.
