In a game that was very reminiscent of their successful Euro 2004 campaign Greece almost pulled off a shock upset away to Belgium on Saturday night until that man Romelu Lukaku was on hand to score late on with a stunning strike, giving the home side the share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw which saw the visitors finish the game with just nine men.
Everton fans will have been watching the game wondering when, not if, their star striker was set to pounce and there was a sense of inevitability when he finally did in the 89th minute, with a turn and shot that broke Greek hearts following Kostas Mitroglou’s opener.
Panagiotis Tachtsidis was sent off for Greece with just under half an hour left to play before Giorgos Tzavellas also saw red for a second yellow late on after a scuffle broke out between the two sets of players.
The main talking point, however, wasn’t the red cards it was Lukaku who’s been linked with a move away from Goodison this summer, and here’s how Everton fans reacted to his goal:
Lukaku has just scored an 89th minute equaliser for Belgium against Greece. Lovely turn and finish in box. #EFC
