Everton v Liverpool: Combined XI

The first Merseyside derby of the season comes our way on Monday night as Ronald Koeman looks for another scalp in his first experience of the clash.

The former Southampton manager continued his impressive record against Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger (two losses in 12 games) on Tuesday night as his side came from 1-0 down to take all three points, with goals from Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams sealing a memorable 2-1 win.

Meanwhile, their rivals from across Stanley Park, Liverpool, continued their free-scoring run as a brace from Adam Lallana either side of a Divock Origi goal gave Jurgen Klopp a comfortable 3-0 win at Middlesbrough, a result which took the red half of Merseyside to second in the table, whilst Everton dropped to 8th.

Both sides have had their issues this term, Everton started brightly under the tutelage of the Dutchman, but have struggled in recent weeks, whilst Klopp’s side remain leaky at the back despite their sharp attack.

However, could the creme of both sides combine and create  a formidable force? Take a look at Shoot!’s combined Merseyside XI…

Maarten Stekelenburg

The first position was probably the hardest to fill, a problem position for both sides. With Jurgen Klopp is in the midst of a dilemma between an under-fire Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet who he opted to replace over the summer, atleast his Everton counterpart, Ronald Koeman, knows where he stands.

Stekelenburg has had his issues this term but is a solid shot-stopper, and his consistent place in the Toffees starting XI gets him a stop in this side.

Nathaniel Clyne

Seamus Coleman is a top-class full-back, and showed that he is just as adept going forward with his goal against Arsenal in the week.

However, as an overall player Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne just pips him here, the former Southampton man can cause problems all day long whilst remaining tight at the back.

Liverpool’s summer signing has been a silver lining this season amidst some rather questionable defending from the Reds.

The 25-year-old has been impressing on all fronts and has earned himself praise from Liverpool hero Sami Hyypia, which is more than enough to earn a place in this side.

The former Swansea captain could turn out to be one of the signings of the season. Calm, composed and a real leader at the back, there aren’t many sides in the Premier League he wouldn’t get into.

With the majority of Liverpool’s back line caught in a daze of confusion for most of the season, the Welshman will bring a level head and balance this back four.

Liverpool’s issues at left-back are very well documented with versatile midfielder James Milner filling in after Klopp opted not to replace the much maligned Alberto Moreno over the summer.

Baines on the other hand is a well established, experienced and talented full-back who, even at 32, still produces on a regular basis.

Jordan Henderson

The Reds captain has settled magnificently under Jurgen Klopp and continues to pull the strings in the middle of the park at Anfield this season, whilst Mane, Lallana & Co run riot ahead of him.

Idrissa Gueye

The former Aston Villa man was a diamond in the rough as the Villans endured one of the worst seasons in their history.

The industrious Senegal international has continued his fine work after his move to Goodison park, and would provide the perfect partner for Henderson.

Saido Mane

The former Southampton man has excelled since he became the latest star to swap the Solent for the Mersey, having bagged seven goals in 17 outings during his maiden season at Anfield.

The explosive winger will have the perfect base to work from with Gueye and Henderson holding everything together.

Adam Lallana

This is where it all gets a bit red for a while, I’m afraid. Fear not Evertonians, there is more to come for you.

Ross Barkley could have been a candidate for this No.10 slot, but the England international seems to have disappeared somewhat this term, with a string of poor showings.

Thus, another ex-Saint in Adam Lallana gets the nod. The tricky midfielder maestro has come into his own under the guidance of Klopp and the Liverpool fans are reaping the rewards of that.

Roberto Firmino

With Philippe Coutinho out injured there is only one other that can fill this slot. In fact, Coutinho’s injury almost helps solve a dilemma here.

Firmino, alongside the likes of Lallana and Mane has been tormenting back fours all season and would continue to do so in this fearsome setup.

Romelu Lukaku

We’re back into the blue! Of course this man has to get in. Whilst across Stanley Park, manager Jurgen Klopp has been utilising his wealth of attacking midfield talent in the strikers role, whilst Daniel Sturridge sits and watches, Ronald Koeman has one of the best in the league.

On his day the Belgian international is practically unstoppable and, with the attacking talent around him, would cause havoc in this side.
