Everton’s top 3 stars over the international break

Ronald Koeman took over from the sacked Roberto Martinez in the summer with the brief to get Everton back up near the European places.

The Toffees lumbered to an 11th place finish in the Premier League last season, which ultimately cost Martinez his job, but they have looked a different side under former Southampton boss Koeman this time around.

His side currently sit seventh in the league having won five of their opening 11 games, including four of their first five matches.

Things have stuttered in recent weeks, with just one win in six meaning that they have fallen out of the top four, and they now find themselves six points behind fourth place Arsenal.

Although they haven’t been at their best in the last few weeks, Everton look a lot better defensively and in Romelu Lukaku an Yannick Bolasie, they will always carry a goal threat.

Nevertheless, international football took centre stage this fortnight, and several Everton players received call-ups to their national teams as important World Cup qualifiers took place across the globe.

But which Everton player performed the best? Here are THREE Toffees players that starred for their country this fortnight…

Yannick Bolasie

Everton forward Yannick Bolasie helped DR Congo to an important 2-1 win over Guinea on Sunday.

The 27-year-old netted the winner four minutes from time to secure a second successive win in their 2018 World Cup qualifying group, and leave them top of the standings.

Only the group winners qualify for the World Cup in Russia, so it’s imperative that Bolasie stays fit and keeps up his excellent run of form if DR Congo want to qualify for the tournament for the first time.

Gerard Deulofeu

Gerard Deulofeu made history for Spain this week by appearing in their Under-21 qualification play-off against Austria.

Not only did the second leg see him win his 32nd cap for the side, the most of anyone in Spanish history, but his goal in the first leg, as well as securing them victory as that away goal proved to be the difference following a 0-0 draw in the second leg, was his 16th for the Under-21s, another record.

It’s a phenomenal effort from the Everton man, who is surely going to add to his solitary senior cap in the near future.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has now scored five goals for Belgium this season after his brace in their 8-1 thumping of Estonia on Sunday.

The 23-year-old scored the seventh and eighth goal as Roberto Martinez’s men ran riot in Brussels to maintain their 100% start to their Group H qualifying campaign with four wins out of four.

It takes Lukaku’s club and country tally up to 12 in 14 games this season, and he doesn’t look like letting up any time soon.
