Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand cannot believe his former club sold Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Speaking on BT Sport as a pundit ahead of the Bundesliga outfit’s trip to Tottenham at Wembley Stadium in the Champions League last night, the 37-year-old said, “I can’t believe he was allowed to leave.

“Even more surprising for me is £7.3m in today’s market, that is an absolute steal.

“For the numbers that he was putting up consistently, year in year out, getting better, and as you say there, 33 [goals] in 53 [games] for a fairly mediocre team, so I can’t believe it.”

Mexico international, Hernandez, was on the winning side on Wednesday night as Leverkusen defeated Premier League side Spurs 1-0 inside the national stadium, with Kevin Kampl’s 65th minute simple finish proving to be the winner.

The 28-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford back in 2010 from Guadalajara, scored 59 goals in 157 appearances for the Red Devils before leaving for Leverkusen last August.
