After being booed at the national stadium on Saturday evening, Wayne Rooney’s international break has just got even worse as, according to Sky Sport’s reporter Jim White, the Man United star is set to be benched for the second qualifier against Slovenia on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old has come under intense fire for both club and country since a premature exit from the European Championships at the hands of Iceland this summer.
Having been dropped to the bench by club boss, Jose Mourinho, it seems his international counterpart will follow suit after the former Everton youngster was booed at Wembley before the 2-0 win over Malta on Saturday.
Since being left out of the Red Devils side, they have – unfortunately for Rooney – look a quicker and more fearful side and, should the same be true for the Three Lions, he may find it difficult to force his way back into either side.
His position in the pecking order has long been up for debate, and it seems that many England fans have taken the news rather well…
Yes Gareth! Start Rooney against the weaker of the two oppositions but bench him for the stronger one.

Fair play to Gareth Southgate. He's made the right decision. Rooney dropped. More to follow on @TeleFootball

Good on Southgate for having the balls to drop Rooney
