Five Manchester United players who deserve more credit

Five Manchester United players who deserve more credit, according to local news outlet Manchester Evening News.

United is a club full of much-credited legends and rightly so, going back to the Busby Babes right through to the modern era there are players who are worshiped by Reds’ fans all over the world.

However, there are a lot of players who done a very good job in a United shirt who don’t quite get the credit they deserved in the eyes of the Manchester Evening News.

Here are those five below in no particular order.

Owen Hargreaves

Brought in to the club by Sir Alex back in 2007 for a fairly big fee of £17million from Bayern Munich, Hargreaves made a huge impact in his first season. Many don’t know that he made 34 appearances in 2008 and was a big reason behind United’s famous Premier League and Champions League double.

Rafael Da Silva

Replacing Gary Neville at right back was never going to be an easy job, but Rafael filled the role superbly. He brought a much-needed energy to the team and in his time at United secured three Premier League titles. Playing over 150 games for the club, he was perhaps prematurely sold by Louis Van Gaal back in 2015.

Ronny Johnsen

Give most football fans the task of naming the United treble-winning team of 1999 and they will do it with ease, but Johnsen might be the player they struggle with. But the truth is, the Norwegian defender formed a formidable partnership with Jap Stam and played a key role in United’s success that famous season.

Raimond van der Gouw

Similar to Johnsen, Gouw would be put in that category. He was a more than trusted understudy was the imperious Peter Schmeichel and was a stalwart after the Great Dane left the club following the 1998/99 campaign. United had a string of failed keepers during that period and the Dutchman was perhaps underrated.

Ander Herrera

Signed from Ahletic Bilbao for £24million back in the summer of 2014, Herrera was sometimes criticised for his performances in the United midfield. But the truth of the matter is, for a time he was the club’s only dependable midfield player and put in 100% effort at all times. A club such a PSG coming in for him, tells people all they need to know.
