Five players Spurs could sign in the January transfer window

After a poor start to the season, which included a 7-2 smashing to Bayern Munich and defeats to Newcastle, Leicester and Brighton, Mauricio Pochettino was replaced by Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur in November.

Since then, Spurs have won four of their six matches in all competitions, scoring bundles of goals but continuing to look fragile in defence.

So with the club still being involved in the Champions League, FA Cup and needing to fight to secure a top-four finish, it will be interesting to see if the North London club dip into the transfer market in January.

There have already been a number of players linked with a switch to Spurs in the new year but who are they?

Here are five players are reportedly on Tottenham’s radar…

Paulo Dybala

Argentina international Paulo Dybala was – as reported by Sky Sports – a target of Tottenham in the summer until the deal collapsed.

Now the Evening Standard whipped fans into a frenzy by reporting that the 26-year-old recently visited London.

Dybala would certainly add real quality to Spurs’ forward line and is able to play in several positions including filling in for striker Harry Kane as the main forward.

This would allow Mourinho to rest Kane and still have a fantastic forward line. This is something that Poch could never really do in his five-year spell at the helm.

Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has been on many teams’ radar for the past couple of seasons, with both Tottenham and Manchester United (under Jose Mourinho’s management) reported by The Sun to be interested in the Portugal international.

Now that the ‘Special One’ is at the North London, could Spurs continue their pursuit of the midfielder?

Well despite rumours that the playmaker could make the switch, Mourinho has claimed that he is out of his price range.

But with Christian Eriksen looking likely to depart in January or next summer, it’s hard to rule out Spurs making a move fo the man who scored 20 goals in 33 games in the Primeira Liga last season.

Nathan Ferguson

Nathan Ferguson is tipped by The Sun to leave current Championship title challengers West Brom for Mourinho’s Spurs.

He joined Albion in 2009, working his way up through the youth system and into the senior set-up.

At just 19, the right-back has made 18 appearances this term, helping the Baggies challenge at the top of the table.

Rated at around £20million, the England youth international could be a long-term option in that position plus would give Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters some much needed competition.

Alexander Nubel

Schalke goalkeeper, Alexander Nubel is another player – according to Calciomercato – to be attracting interest from Spurs.

With current number one keeper, Hugo Lloris, injured and error-prone when fit, making more, Mourinho may look to add the Germany Under-21 international.

Paulo Gazzaniga has done well between the sticks but it’s unlikely he will be a long-term first choice at Spurs.

Nubel, who has been compared to legendary shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, is out of contract at the end of the season meaning that Tottenham could sign him for absolutely nothing on a pre-contract agreement.

Nathan Ake

According to Football Insider, Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake is a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dutchman has been a pivotal player for the Cherries, showing fantastic leadership for Eddie Howe’s side since joining from Chelsea – initially on loan – in 2016.

With current central defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld both over 30-years-old and in contract disputes, Mourinho may look to freshen his defence up.

However, the Evening Standard claim that Frank Lampard is a fan of Ake and could look to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.
