Bury boosted their chances of League One survival on Saturday afternoon with a dramatic 2-1 win away at relegation rivals Chesterfield.

The hosts took the lead in the first-half as Kristian Dennis grabbed his fifth league goal of the season, following a great pass from Sylvain Ebanks-Blake.

The Spireites were reduced to ten men in the second-half when Tom Anderson was sent off for a foul in the area on 38-year old striker Ryan Lowe.

Lowe was unable to convert the resulting spot kick after debutant Chesterfield goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann saved his effort.

Shortly after the penalty save, Bury got their equaliser courtesy of a wonder strike from midfielder Andrew Tutte, a strike that not many ‘keepers would have stopped.

Despite a good debut from German shot stopper Stuckmann, he was at fault for Bury’s injury time winner, after his poor touch from a back-pass was quickly intercepted by substitute George Miller, who went onto tuck the ball home into an empty net.

Shoot! looks at five things we learned from the League One ‘relegation six pointer’ at the Proact Stadium…

Debut delight for Lee Clark

It was a debut win for Lee Clark in his first game in charge of the Shakers, after becoming their new manager on Wednesday.

Clark became Bury boss after departing Kilmarnock just a few days ago.

The win for Bury lifts them out of the relegation zone on goal difference and if Clark can keep up his performance levels from his first game in charge, Bury have a good chance of staying in League One come the end of the season.

Winless run continues for Gary Caldwell

Gary Caldwell is still yet to pick up his first win as Chesterfield manager.

Saturday’s match was his fifth game in charge and he is still to find a winning formula.

Chesterfield looked set to win the match before Tom Anderson was dismissed with just over 10 minutes remaining of the match.

Caldwell’s men next face Millwall at The Den, who defeated Premier League champions Leicester City in the FA Cup at the weekend.

No Vaughan, no problem

Bury picked up their 2-1 win despite missing top goalscorer James Vaughan, who has notched 18 times already this season.

Even without their talisman, Bury did not struggle to score twice which proved to be enough to defeat their relegation rivals on Saturday.

Vaughan did not feature at the Proact due to a hamstring injury, but goals from Tutte and Miller made Vaughan’s absence unnoticeable.

Spireites struggle without Ched Evans

Chesterfield were without their top two goalscorers on Saturday, in the forms of Jay O’Shea and Ched Evans.

After O’Shea was sent out on loan to local rivals Sheffield United, Ched Evans has taken the role as the club’s main goalscoring outlet.

Kristian Dennis may have netted for the Spireites, but the hosts missed plenty of easy chances on Saturday afternoon, which Evans would have comfortably finished off.

Dennis’ goal puts him level with Evans for the season, but the duo must improve their goalscoring form if they want to survive in League One.

Shakers’ second-half starlets

An encouraging sign for Bury fans were Lee Clark’s duo of teenage substitutions against Chesterfield.

Callum Styles, 16, and George Miller, 18, both featured as second-half substitutes for the Shakers, and Miller even got the winner for Clark’s side.
