Five things we learned from Derby County v Leicester City

Derby County have taken Premier League champions Leicester City to a replay after drawing 2-2 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Rams thought they had caused a massive shock until Foxes captain Wes Morgan scored a late header to force a replay on February 8.

In their first meeting since 2014, Darren Bent put his own side behind after a catastrophic own goal. He then made amends by scoring at the right end ten minutes later.

Derby then took the lead courtesy of veteran midfielder Craig Bryson, who got his first goal of the season just before half-time.

Friday’s cup tie was a superb occasion, an East Midlands derby between two rivals, under the floodlights and live on TV.

The match was very entertaining and both sides performed well for stages of the match.

Shoot! looks at the five major talking points from Friday night’s FA Cup fourth round clash…

Premier League Champions forced into a replay

Claudio Ranieri’s side were left stunned on Friday evening after being forced to a replay by their Championship opposition.

It was a game well fought by both sides and Leicester’s late equaliser prevented The Rams of a superb cup upset.

The draw means that the Foxes have yet another match to add to their already busy schedule due to their Champions League commitments.

The draw was the first time the two sides had drew in the FA Cup since 1894, in only their fourth ever meeting in England’s oldest cup competition.

Derby won 2-0 in their last meeting in this competition all the way back in 1909.

Darren Bent: Zero to Hero

The former England international achieved the rare feat of scoring for both teams on Friday evening.

Bent gave the Foxes the lead inside the first 10 minutes with a calamitous clearance into his own net.

He made up for his mistake later in the first-half by pulling The Rams level. He got on the end of clever cross by Will Hughes to get his seventh goal of the season.

The aerial effort was also Bent’s third goal in cup competitions this campaign; having previously scored in the third round of the FA Cup and the second round of the EFL Cup.

It was the 32-year-old’s first ever-goal against Leicester and his goal at the right end proved to be vital to give The Rams a replay at the King Power Stadium.

Lacklustre Leicester

Wes Morgan’s late header was the first time that the Foxes had actually scored via one of their own players since their third round victory over Everton on January 7.

Jamie Vardy has been struggling to hit the back of the net this season and his lack of form continued to show on Friday.

Both Vardy and Shinji Okazaki struggled in front of goal at Pride Park and the form of Derby goalkeeper Scott Carson did not help matters.

A reason to smile for the Foxes is the return of Riyad Mahrez. Last season’s PFA Player of the Year made his first appearance for last season’s Premier League champions on Friday since returning from the African Cup of Nations.

Mahrez played for the last 30 minutes of the game, and alongside fellow substitute Demarai Gray, the duo influenced the Foxes to salvage a draw.

Bryson’s long awaited goal

The long-serving Rams midfielder scored his first goal for the club in nine months on Friday evening.

The goal itself showed the qualities that Bryson brings to the side. He picked the loose ball up and ran past Andy King before curling his left foot strike in the bottom corner of the net from just inside the penalty area.

The Scotsman has played over 200 times for Derby and has also made the most Championship appearances of any player currently in Steve McClaren’s side.

Bryson’s last goal came against Bristol City last April and the Derby fans were ecstatic to see their midfielder score again.

Ranieri’s ‘Deadline Day’ deal(s)?

After the match, Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri announced that he wants to add to his squad prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

The Italian said, “It is vital that we add to our squad before the Burnley match.

“I will speak to our sporting directors to see if there is something good. If not, then it is okay.”

With Luis Hernandez and Jeffrey Schlupp already leaving this month, the squad could possibly require one or two fresh faces.

Middlesbrough midfielder Gaston Ramirez has been linked with a move to the King Power Stadium all month, so there is a possibility that we could be seeing him or other new faces before the window shuts on Tuesday.
