Four problems the Premier League could face when trying to finish the season

Four problems the Premier League could face, when trying to finish the season.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic which is sweeping the world at this time, the Premier League along with many other sports made the decision to cancel all fixtures.

Originally the plan was to postpone all fixtures until April the 4th, however due to the ever-increasing spread of COVID-19, the Premier League bosses have stated that football will start again on April the 30th at the earliest.

A joint statement from the FA, Premier League and EFL expressed “a commitment to finding ways of resuming the 2019-20 season” and completing all domestic and European matches “as soon as it is safe and possible to do so”.

We look at the four stumbling blocks which could potentially cause the Premier League and entire football league problems.

Football not starting again in April

Of course, things are changing daily in the UK as the Government and Senior Advisors attempt to tackle this new disease. However, many experts believe we are still weeks away from the peak of cases in the UK, meaning an April 30th Date seems very optimistic.

Giving players time to train and get match ready

The League cannot expect players to have six weeks plus off and jump straight back into things, you would like to think they will get minimum two weeks or even more training as a group before they are expected to play games.

Impact on next season’s scheduling

Many believe, if they make the decision to wait for the safety of fans to return to the stadium, football will not be allowed to go ahead until July/August time. With this in mind, next season could not potentially start until October. With Euro 2020 now rescheduled to 2021, they will have a tough job fitting the fixtures in before end of May. Will cup competitions have to be altered or cancelled?

Player’s contract end in June

Although the Euro’s have cleared the way for games to go ahead in the summer, it isn’t as simple as that. Many football league clubs have players who have contract due to end in June. Would they all have to sign a 3-month extension, some players might not want to, they can’t be forced.
