How Manchester Untied could have looked if Jose Mourinho was able to sign the players he desperately needed, according to the Daily Star.

There was high hopes for United fans when one of the world’s best managers Jose Mourinho took over from Louis Van Gaal back in the summer of 2016.

After delivering both the EFL Cup and Europa league trophy in his first season, things were looking like they could get back on track for the once-great club, but unfortunately United were unable to kick on from there.

A lot of tension during the Portuguese man’s tenure was Ed Woodward failing to bring the signings Mourinho desperately craved to the club.

The Daily Star took a look at the five failed-signings that could have made all the difference to Mourinho with United.

Rafael Varane

Varane is quite possible, one of the best centre backs in Europe and certainly was at the time Mourinho was keen to sign him. The now World Cup winner was still playing second fiddle to Sergio Ramos and there were rumours he wanted to leave Madrid. Unfortunately for Mourinho he didn’t get his man and always seemed to struggle with a centre back pairing.

Ivan Perisic

Possibly the closest of the five signings to come to Old Trafford. Perisic was so direct and worked so hard, he was practically the perfect Mourinho signing. However, Woodward and Co could not get a deal done for the Inter Milan winger, and reports suggest Mourinho was not happy about it at the time.

Gareth Bale

The Gareth Bale to United rumours still continue to this day and probably seems more likely now than it did back when Mourinho was at the helm. Despite all that the Wales star has achieved in the Spain capital, he is not adored by the fans and certainly doesn’t seem to be by his manager Zinedine Zidane.

Mesut Ozil

What would have been a highly controversial move at the time, the highest paid player at Arsenal Mesut Ozil would have caused Premier League shockwaves if he had made the switch to United. The Germany international played some of his best football when under Mourinho at Real Madrid and could have starred at United.

Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies would have been a shrewd move from United, given he was only 18-years of age at the time. Back when Mourinho wanted the pacy winger, he was playing his football in MLS for the Vancouver Whitecaps but now is starring in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and looks the real deal.
