Is this proof that Griezmann must join Chelsea over Man United?

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is reportedly set to leave the Vincente Claderon at the end of the season, with manager Diego Simeone on his way as well.

With the speculation surrounding the France international’s future rife, he has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League, with either Man United or Chelsea the destination.

The 25-year-old split with his agent and therefore will more than likely base his move on more of a personal basis as opposed to agent’s fees and clauses in contracts.

There are plenty of benefits in moving to either Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge, there is the chance to work under Jose Mourinho and alongside national friend Paul Pogba up north, or there is the temptation of playing in and around the likes of Willian and Hazard at Stamford Bridge, whilst also enjoying everything that London has to offer a professional footballer.

But, what if he based his decision on a purely footballing basis, how would he fair and where would he go? Well, we’ve asked our friends over at Football Manager to find out exactly how he’d do at either club, and here’s what they came up with…

Griezmann joins the London club for £45 million and is handed the number 9 shirt upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The France international is predominantly used as a central attacking midfielder with Eden Hazard the preferred option on the left-wing. Griezmann frequently partners Diego Costa up front when Conte switches to a 3-5-2 system in the latter stages of the season.

The 25-year-old helps Chelsea to a second place finish behind Manchester City as Chelsea rack up 80 points over the 38 games.

Griezmann enjoys a positive first season in English football, scoring 12 times and assisting 10 goals, his average match rating is also impressive at 7.62 – amongst the very top performers in the league.

Conte’s side go on to win their eighth FA Cup, beating West Brom 3-0 in the final with Griezmann assisting the third goal for Diego Costa

Chelsea qualify for the Champions League but are knocked out at the quarter-final stage at the hands of PSG.

The Frenchaman joined his compatriot Paul Pogba at Old Trafford for a fee of £50m, and was handed the No. 30 shirt upon his arrival.

During his first season at the club Mourinho utilises Griezmann on the left-wing which allows Anthony Martial to join Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front in a 4-3-1-2 formation and he becomes United’s key playmaker notching up a total of 18 assists in all competitions.

He is, however, at his best in the Premier League where he creates 13 assists and scores 7 times for an average rating of 7.51 helping Mourinho’s side to a second placed finish on 82 points, just four adrift of champions, Arsenal (I know, Arsenal? And they said Leicester was unrealistic.)

His best performance comes against Wenger’s side at Old Trafford scoring one and assisting twice in a 3-1 victory.

The former Chelsea boss fields weakened sides in both domestic cup competitions which sees United exit the FA Cup and EFL cup early with Griezmann seeing little playing time in either competition.

In the Champions League, the former Atletico Madrid man turns the tables on his old employers with a goal and an assist across the two legs of the first knockout round to send United through 4-2 on aggregate, however, their European adventure ends abruptly soon afterwards with Real Madrid proving too strong over two legs, beating Mourinho’s side 4-1 on aggregate.

Verdict

It is clear that from the simulations run that the France international would excel in the Premier League, whether that be in Manchester or London.

He was perhaps more prolific in scoring and assisting in the red of United, however, the attraction of historic silverware in his first season at Stamford Bridge may well be enough to convince him to head to London.

Over to you Antoine…
