Is this the Tottenham XI to take all the points from Monaco in the Champions League?

Despite the sour end to their campaign in the Premier League last season, Tottenham had a year to remember as they were largely the sole title challengers to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester, a challenge which fell at the final few hurdles.

One triumph from last term that will not be tainted by Arsenal’s final day leap-frog into second, is the qualification for the Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2010/11 season.

Their European campaign gets underway on Wednesday night as Spurs host Monaco at Wembley Stadium, their home in Europe for the coming season whilst White Hart Lane is under development.

The North London’s last outing in the top continental tournament saw them reach the quarter finals where they were knocked out by Real Madrid, after Gareth Bale scored a memorable hat-trick in the group stages at Inter Milan.

Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane can create similar memories, all starting  in London on Wednesday, but how will his side line up?

The Spurs captain is back in between the sticks for the North London side after a short injury lay-off and whilst his understudy, Michel Vorm, deputised well the Frenchman is a must if there is to be success on the continent for Pochettino’s side this summer.

The shot-stopper has plenty of Champions League experience on his side, having reached the semi-finals with former side, Lyon in 2010 where they were knocked out by Bayern Munich.

The England international has started where he left off last season, capped by an impressive performance against Stoke at the weekend, where he grabbed himself an assist.

The threat posed by the former Sheffield United man when he moves forward is a great one, which could be key to Spurs breaking down the current Ligue 1 leaders.

The Belgian international was one half of the most impressive defensive pairing last season, and will need to be on top form in Europe if Spurs are to enjoy any success.

The former Southampton man had a fairly quiet 90 minutes at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday, but can bring a lot more than just a solid defence to his side, with great passing and creative ability going forward.

The other half of the beastly Belgian pair, the former Ajax man allows his partner in crime to go forward and aid those ahead of them whilst he minds the shop at the back.

The 29-year-old has experience in Europe across both the Champions League and Europa League with both Ajax and Spurs, however, has never got past the group stages in the top competition.

The Wales international came into the side as cover for the injured Danny Rose in the win over Stoke and looked far from out-of-place.

Monaco offer a completely different threat to Mark Hughes’ side and, although the former Swansea man does not go on the same marauding runs as Rose, he is just as solid defensively and will be more than confident of handling the French side.

CM: Mousa Dembele

The Belgian international is available for selection against Monaco having missed the start of the domestic season due to a suspension which was carried over from the infamous Chelsea game at the end of last season.

Victor Wanyama has come into the side in his absence and made a brilliant start to life at Spurs, meaning that the former Fulham man will want to reassert his place in midfield.

CM: Eric Dier

The former Sporting man will be a key to any joy for Pochettino’s side this season, with the added muscle of the likes of Wanyama, Sissoko and Dembele around him Spurs will have a very solid base to their midfielder.

With Dier and Co. holding things together in the middle, the abundance of attacking flair ahead of them will be handed the confidence to go forward and make something happen against Monaco at Wembley.

RW: Moussa Sissoko

The former Newcastle man made his debut from the bench for Spurs on Saturday, and will be desperate for a full debut, on a stage which suits him.

Despite all the accusations around his attitude and ego, Sissoko shines on the big stage, and what bigger is there than a Champions League game at Wembley, Pochettino needs to give him the chance to thrive.

AM: Dele Alli

It is almost impossible to imagine this lad’s name not being on the team sheet, he his a must start for Spurs all season long and, for us here at Shoot! he is, after maybe Lloris, the first name on that sheet.

The former MK Dons man still has a youthful fearlessness and is yet to really arrive on the European stage, if any player in lily white is to replicate Bale’s momentous hat-trick, it’s Alli.

LW: Christian Eriksen

The Danish winger would not look out of place in any starting XI in the Champions League, like Alli he is a must start at Wembley on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old has the ability to turn a game on it’s head on his own should things not go to plan for Mauricio Pochettino, and he always has something spectacular up his sleeve.

ST: Harry Kane

Last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner finally opened his account for the new season at Stoke on Saturday as he reached the spectacular landmark of 50 league goals for Spurs.

The England international will want to use that goal at the weekend to spark a run of goals and help to make Wembley a home away from home for the season.
