Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi will hope to see his side improve drastically next term after two dismal domestic campaigns.

The Italian was appointed by Spurs at the end of March, following the sacking of Igor Tudor who himself had replaced Thomas Frank just a month earlier.

De Zerbi oversaw some improvement during the final couple of months of last season, although Spurs still finished 17th and only guaranteed to flight survival on the final day of the season, at the expense of London rivals West Ham United.

Now, however, it appears that Tottenham are closing in on a huge summer signing to bolster De Zerbi’s squad ahead of the start of next season.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to travel to London on Thursday in order to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Spurs.

Romano claims that the Lilywhites have agreed a deal to sign the Italy international, in a deal worth more than £85 million.

Tonali, 26, joined Newcastle from AC Milan back in 2023 and has since built a reputation as one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League.

He has played 110 times for the Magpies across all competitions, helping Eddie Howe’s side to win the Carabao Cup in 2025.

Romano claims that Spurs and Newcastle have reached an agreement on a deal for Tonali, who has also agreed personal terms with the north London side.

The midfielder will now travel to the capital to undergo a medical before finalising the move to The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Romano claims.

It is claimed that the fee agreed for Tonali will be an initial £92.5 million, plus a potential £7.5 million in further add-ons, which would make the Italian the most expensive signing in Spurs’ history.
