Jurgen Klopp must improve these 3 things at Liverpool in January

Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge at Liverpool has got off to a decent start.

The Reds have won five of their opening seven league games, including their last four in a row, with victories over Arsenal, Leicester City, and Chelsea particularly noteworthy.

A 2-0 defeat at Burnley is the only blot on a great opening few months of the season for Klopp’s side, who have also reached the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

The league’s joint top-scorers sit fourth in the division, two points shy of leaders Manchester City, and have been tipped by many fans up and down the country to challenge for the title.

However, some still feel that Liverpool need more reinforcements in January to sustain a title challenge, so manager Klopp may start thinking about who he might bring in.

Here are THREE areas he needs to improve in January…

The left-back department

It’s no secret that Liverpool are playing with no recognised left-back at the moment.

This has all arisen from Alberto Moreno’s hopeless performance at Arsenal on the opening day, where he made two defensive mistakes which, for his sake, were counteracted by the Liverpool frontmen.

Nonetheless, Klopp must be on the look-out for a left-back as, although James Milner is deputising well at the moment, an out-and-out left-back will eventually be needed as the season progresses.

Defensive midfield area

Jordan Henderson has been in excellent form for Liverpool so far this season, with his goal at Chelsea a sign of the immense confidence he has playing in the centre of Klopp’s midfield.

However, their strength in depth in this position is lacking, and might be an area Klopp is looking to strengthen in January.

Inter Milan’s Geoffrey Kondogbia has had limited playing time in Italy, and the Reds were reported to be interested in a move for 23-year-old midfielder – this could be a deal Klopp feels could reinforce Liverpool’s midfield options for both the rest of the season and for years to come.

Liverpool’s main issues are defensive ones – there are big question marks over their capabilities at the back.

We’ve already acknowledged the need for a left-back, but Klopp may also feel that his central defensive options need strengthening.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have been alright in the early stages of this season, but the Reds have already conceded more goals than anyone else in the top half.

Sometimes the attacking force may not fire, like in the defeat at Burnley, so it is integral that Liverpool have a defence capable of shutting out any team in the division – Klopp may need to bring a centre-half in to do just that.
