Klopp should drop these 3 Liverpool players against Chelsea

Liverpool’s disastrous January isn’t quite over, sorry Jurgen!

Klopp’s side host Premier League leaders Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday night (20:00), with The Reds looking to see off the first month of 2017 with just their second win.

Other than their FA Cup third round replay victory over League Two side Plymouth Argyle, Liverpool have been knocked out of the same competition by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round, slayed by Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-finals and have suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to the hands of Swansea City to inflict a huge blow to their 2016-17 title bid.

But before the German can wave goodbye to a rotten January, Klopp must welcome Antonio Conte’s Blues to Merseyside tomorrow night, with Chelsea 10 points above the hosts in the top-flight table, and already eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

After losing 2-1 to Championship outfit Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday, here is three players Klopp MUST drop if Liverpool have any chance of beating Chelsea…

Lucas Leiva

From hero to zero, the 30-year-old struggled against Wolves’ sharp and speedy counter-attacks at Anfield.

The Brazil international, who netted Liverpool’s only goal in The Reds’ third round replay victory over Plymouth, did not lead by example as captain, as he simply looked lost trying to fill in for Jordan Henderson.

Lucas dropped back into defence come the second-half, a move by Klopp that proved beneficial considering Paul Lambert’s side didn’t concede a third goal, or more, but midfielder Henderson is sure to replace the Brazilian against Chelsea tomorrow night.

Connor Randall

This was Randall’s first game of the season, and unfortunately for the youngster, it showed.

Making way for the influential Philippe Coutinho at half-time against Wolves pretty much shows Klopp has no plans for Randall to feature against Chelsea on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old was at fault for Wolves second strike at Anfield, being caught out of position before failing to catch eventual goalscorer Andreas Weimann as the visitors broke on the counter-attack.

Fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne is a doubt to face Chelsea due to an abdominal muscle injury, but even if the England international misses out, Klopp has plenty of defensive cover for someone else to fill in right-back.

It was a good 45-minute run out for Randall, but he is no way near ready to face the likes of Eden Hazard tomorrow.

Alberto Moreno

When will the Spaniard ever learn?

In a rare start at left-back under Klopp, the 24-year-old blew his chance to perhaps get ahead of Jame Milner in the German’s pecking order, despite looking an attacking threat at Anfield.

Although the full-back ventured forward and provided Liverpool with width against Wolves, Moreno was constantly caught out of position and opened up the space for Paul Lambert’s men to counter-attack profitably.

Moreno was at fault, at least partially, for both of the away side’s goals – conceding the opening minute free-kick that led to Richard Stearman’s header, before leaving Helder Costa unmarked as the Wolves winger teed up Weimann for Wolves’ second.
