Koeman should drop these 3 Everton players against Manchester United

Ronald Koeman’s Everton travel to Manchester United on Tuesday (8pm kick-off) looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

The Toffees were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday to suffer only a second league defeat of 2017, but second successive on the road to a side above them in the table.

Koeman’s men were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham in the preceding away game, and with the fifth place side United coming up on Tuesday, they really need to improve away from home against the top teams.

And what better way to start than to beat Jose Mourinho’s men on Tuesday evening.

The Red Devils could only muster a 0-0 draw against West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday, which was their 11th draw of the season, and eighth at home in 15 games.

Thus, Koeman’s men must be confident going to Manchester on Tuesday, although after their display against Liverpool on Saturday, he may have to make some changes to his starting eleven.

Thus, here are THREE Everton players who should be dropped from the line-up against United…

Phil Jagielka

Koeman would have been hoping that his experienced centre-back Phil Jagielka would lead by example and help the younger players out in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

But the England international did anything but.

The 34-year-old didn’t look overly assured and composed at the back, with Everton easy to beat in the end as all three goals were arguably avoidable, regardless of how good Liverpool’s approach play was.

You sense that Jagielka’s Everton career is coming to an end, and it’d be a surprise if he were to retain his place against United on Tuesday.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

As harsh as it may be, Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn’t really do enough against Liverpool to warrant a start against United (although that could be said of several Toffees on Saturday!).

The 20-year-old scored his first Premier League goal in their 4-0 win over Hull two weeks ago, but for all his effort and endeavour at Anfield, he didn’t show great quality in the final third.

Although Romelu Lukaku didn’t fare much better, Koeman is unlikely to drop his talisman, so Calvert-Lewin’s place could be under threat at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Ross Barkley

Everton’s Ross Barkley shouldn’t even be able for selection at Old Trafford on Tuesday, given that his awful tackle on Dejan Lovren at Anfield was worthy of a red card, yet he got away with only a yellow.

Nonetheless, the England international once again passed up the opportunity to seriously impress in a big game, with his composure on the ball again lacking, and he too often making the wrong decision at important times.

There were some good moments, but often you are still not sure what you are going to get with Barkley, and going to a tough place like Old Trafford, you surely need to know what your 11 players are going to give.

Thus, Barkley could well find himself on the bench on Tuesday.
