Koeman should drop these 3 Everton players against Premier League leaders Chelsea

Premier League leaders Chelsea could open up a seven-point gap at the top of the table, temporarily at least, when The Blues visit Goodison Park on Sunday (14:05) to face Everton, with second placed Tottenham Hotspur competing in the North London derby later tomorrow.

The Toffees, who drew 0-0 at West Ham United last weekend, are pushing for a top six finish and European football next term, but still trail sixth placed Arsenal by two points, having played two fixtures more.

Whilst for The Blues, who hold a four-point gap at the summit prior to kick-off tomorrow, are in a confident mood after beating Southampton 4-2 at Stamford Bridge in midweek.

For Ronald Koeman’s hosts, left-back Leighton Baines is set to make his 350th appearance for the club, whilst forward Enner Valencia is back in contention after being ineligible to face parent club West Ham last time out.

But with Everton still eyeing European football next term, boss Koeman cannot afford anymore slip-ups between now and the end of the 2016-17 season, so here is THREE players the Dutchman should drop in order to try and stun league leaders Chelsea…

Idrissa Gueye

Despite being one of Everton’s best players of the 2016-17 season, the ever-present defensive midfielder had an afternoon to forget at the London Stadium last weekend.

In fact, he was substituted at half-time, signalling just how poor he unusually performed, after being reckless and rather in effective inside the opening 45 minutes.

The 27-year-old, who has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Everton this term, was replaced by Ademola Lookman at the interval last time out and Koeman could hand the youngster a start as The Toffees eye a surprise victory over Antonio Conte’s visitors.

Tom Davies

It is easy to forget that this term is Tom Davies’ breakthrough season with the Premier League club.

The 18-year-old, who is a Toffees youth graduate, has now racked up 23 appearances in all competitions this campaign under manager Koeman, including two senior goals.

However, alongside Gueye, fellow midfielder Davies was hauled off at half-time at West Ham last Saturday after failing to make an impact.

Davies lost possession far too easily and was fortunate to not help gift The Hammers an opening goal in the first period.

Replaced by the experienced Gareth Barry, Koeman could give the youngster a rest against Chelsea.

Kevin Mirallas

It was surprising to see Kevin Mirallas last 72 minutes at the London Stadium last Saturday, after a thoroughly underwhelming performance against West Ham United.

Highly-rated forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin finally replaced the Belgian late on during the goalless draw, after the 29-year-old offered no attacking threat for the visiting Toffees.

Scoring against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea will be significantly harder than getting past the Hammers’ backline, so Mirallas is set for a place on the bench after posing as a bystander last time out.
