Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their reported pursuit of Netherlands international defender Stefan de Vrij, according to the Mirror.

The Premier League side, who visit La Liga outfit Sevilla in the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League tonight, have been linked with signing the Lazio centre-half this summer.

The 26-year-old, who has 33 international caps for his country, has scored four goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side so far this season.

De Vrij, who joined Lazio back in July 2014 following his move from Dutch side Feyenoord, has netted seven goals in 100 games overall for the club.

The Dutchman, who is out of contract come June, is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League this summer, and would prefer a free transfer to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

It is understood The Red Devils have been keeping close tabs on the defender this term, although Premier League rivals Arsenal and Everton are also thought to be interested in his services.

De Vrij is valued at £31.5m, by transfermarkt.
