Scunthorpe United thrashed Southend United 4-0 as the Iron move up to second in League One.

Paddy Madden opened the scoring on his first start of the season, which was followed up by three wonderful strikes. Kevin van Veen turned in a perfect from cross by Josh Morris, who struck a 20-yard effort into the top corner, before Ritchie Smallwood’s thunderous volley sealed an emphatic victory.

Northampton Town have now gone 31 league matches unbeaten as they won 2-0 at home to Walsall. Matty Taylor opened the scoring from Harry Beautyman’s fine cross and Alex Revell made sure of the win when his penalty was expertly converted, after Jason McCarthy had handled the ball inside the area.

Sheffield United won for the third league match in a row as they narrowly claimed three points at AFC Wimbledon, winning 3-2. Mark Duffy and Billy Sharp put the Blades two goals to the good, before Dominic Poleon pulled one back for the hosts.

Matt Done restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion, but the Dons continued to fight back as Tom Elliott made it a nervy final 20 minutes.

Bolton Wanderers remain unbeaten and top of the table, despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Milton Keynes Dons. Mark Beevers had put the Trotters in front, forcing the ball over the line from close-range, before Ryan Colclough netted the leveller at the second attempt, after Mark Howard saved his initial shot.

Oxford United defeated Swindon Town for the sixth successive time as they won at home 2-0. Chris Maguire was the star of the show, netting a brace with a goal either side of half-time. The Robins’ day however, continued to go downhill, as both Lloyd Jones and Lawrence Vigouroux were sent-off for the nine-man visitors.

Bristol Rovers came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with bottom side Rochdale, who clinched only their third point of the season. Callum Camps put Dale in front with a fine finish after latching onto Ian Henderson’s pinpoint pass, before Matt Taylor equalised for the Pirates.

Yet, less than 60 seconds later Henderson scored from Joe Bunney’s cross, putting the visitors 2-1 up after just 22 minutes. Taylor hit his and Rovers’ second of the game shortly after half-time, meaning it was a point apiece.

Bury scored in the last minute to clinch a 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town, as both sides finished the game with only ten-men. James Vaughan and Adam El-Abd were both dismissed either side of half-time, before Danny Mayor opened the scoring after cutting in from the left he struck a terrific effort which curled into the top right-hand corner.

On-loan Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney replied for the Shrews, but Mayor grabbed his second of the match in the 91st minute.

Charlton Athletic came from behind twice to draw 2-2 at Fleetwood Town. The Addicks’ Northern Ireland international striker Josh Magennis scored either side of Chris Long and David Ball’s strikes for the hosts, before Lee Novak netted his first for the visitors in the 87th minute.

Coventry City were denied their first win of the campaign as they drew 1-1 at Millwall. Marvin Sordell had put the Sky Blues one goal to the good with his first strike for his new club, only for Aiden O’Brien to score a simple tap-in with just under 20 minutes left to play.

Port Vale scored a dramatic equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to draw 2-2 at Peterborough United. Alex Jones was the hero as he scored the equaliser from the penalty spot, after initially giving the Valients the lead, before a George Moncur double put the hosts ahead until the closing moments of the game.

Bradford City came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Gillingham, as the Bantams continued their unbeaten start to the season. Cody McDonald’s rasping strike put the Gills in front, only for Jordy Hiwula to head in an equaliser from a corner.

And finally, Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield played out a 0-0 draw in a fairly dull encounter, that saw neither side create any substantial chances.
