League Two Preview: Table toppers Luton host Yeovil, Portsmouth visit Crewe

You would have got good odds on Luton Town sitting top of the pile as League Two enters its second week.

But Nathan Jones’ team sit there on merit having sent former favourites Plymouth Argyle to the foot of the table with a 3-1 reverse on the opening day of the season. They repeated that scoreline with an impressive turnaround against the Championship’s Aston Villa in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Yeovil Town will be the visitors to Kenilworth Road today feeling equally pleased with a two-goal victory at home to Notts County last time out.

Blackpool also stopped the slump that has endured for the past two seasons with a 2-0 win over Exeter City – five debutants last week seeming like a gamble proved worth taking. Today the Tangerines travel the short trip to seaside neighbours Morecambe who looked a little leaden-legged as Grimsby Town easily put them to the sword in Week One.

Grimsby Town go to Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park, with news that Josh Gowling can return to the Mariners’ side despite last week’s red card, having served a one-match ban by sitting out the League Cup tie against Derby County.

Wycombe will probably be grateful to know who to expect having lost out last week to a Crawley Town squad boasting 17 new additions.

The Red Devils meanwhile travel to Doncaster Rovers, facing a wounded beast following Rovers’ somewhat surprising 3-2 loss to Accrington Stanley in their first match – a missed penalty possibly the difference between defeat and a draw. Stanley travel down to take on a Barnet side who safely took a point away from Cambridge’s Abbey Stadium last week.

Shaun Derry’s Cambridge amble across to see who is the East of England’s finest versus Colchester United, who also banked a 1-1 draw versus Hartlepool United. And Pool are making the considerably longer journey down to Exeter.

Ryan Lowe and Alex Kiwomya delivered Crewe Alexandra’s first-ever win against Stevenage last week in a 2-1 win, and will need to shine again as they take on Portsmouth – but given they matched that 2-1 scoreline whilst beating Sheffield United in the Cup, nothing is likely to intimidate them this afternoon when Pompey come calling.

Stevenage will regroup at Notts County, whilst bottom of the table Plymouth will have plenty of time to ponder last week’s debacle as their coach chugs all the way to Carlisle United.

Cheltenham Town won admirers for their draw against Leyton Orient, and will want to turn that good feeling into points on the board as they visit Mansfield Town.

The Stags’ 3-2 win at Newport last week was expected, but nonetheless not to be sneezed at. Newport face a mighty long season as Orient turn up in not the best of moods – but in fairness to them, the Exiles would take where they sit in the table right now come May, a not too shabby 18th.
