League Two Round-Up: Plymouth and Northampton both win by a single goal

Plymouth Argyle remain top of the League Two table as they won 3-2 against Stevenage in a closely fought contest at Home Park.

Carl McHugh put the hosts into the lead, before Charlie Lee equalised. Gregg Wylde then put the Pilgrims in front again before Craig Tanner made it 3-1 with an 18-yard effort. Lee pulled one back for the visitors, but Argyle held on to keep top spot.

Northampton won for the fourth game in a row as they came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at struggling Dagenham. Christian Doidge put the Daggers in front with a clever finish, but late goals from John-Joe O’Toole and a great volley by Ricky Holmes, means the visitors are behind Plymouth on goal difference.

Oxford United’s great week ended with a 2-1 loss by Bristol Rovers after some late drama. Kemar Roofe had put the U’s in front, but Matty Taylor’s header made it 1-1. Ellis Harrison then netted a penalty with just two minutes left to play.

Wimbledon came from behind to beat Mansfield 3-1 in an entertaining match which sees the hosts sit on place outside of the play-offs on goal difference. Matt Green had put the Stags in front. But, strikes from Lyle Taylor, Jonathan Meades and Adebayo Azeez in the second-half saw the Dons leapfrog their opponents in the table.

Hartlepool are now six clear of the relegation zone after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wycombe. Scott Fenwick netted the only strike of the match when he applied the finish to Nathan Thomas’ cross.

Exeter came from a goal behind to win 3-1 at Leyton Orient. Ollie Palmer put the O’s in front after just 28 seconds. However, their performance went downhill from there, as Jayden Stockley scored a brace and, along with a neat finish from Tom Nichols, the Grecians made sure of the three points. Orient boss Ian Hendon was sacked on Monday morning.

Warren Feeney won his first game in charge of Newport as they defeated bottom side York 1-0 at Bootham Crescent. The manager was only appointed on Friday, but watched his side claim victory with Aaron Collins’ low driving effort.

Morecambe came from a goal behind to beat Yeovil 2-1 with two late strikes. Darren Ward had put the Glovers ahead, but efforts from Kevin Ellison and Shaun Miller mean the hosts are now just four points off of the play-offs.

New Notts County manager Jamie Fullarton also got off to winning start as his team won 1-0 at Crawley. Filip Valencic scored a 20-yard volley for the visitors who climb to 16th in the table.

Elsewhere, Carlisle missed the chance to climb into the play-offs as they were held to a goalless draw at Barnet, while Nathan Jones’ first match in charge of Luton also finished 0-0 against Cambridge.

Accrington Stanley’s match against Portsmouth was called off because of a frozen pitch.
