This weekend’s football has certainly thrown up some shock results all across Europe!

With a busy festive schedule ahead for the English sides, teams would have been looking to start off their winter campaigns in the best way possible.

This weekend’s key fixtures included; Manchester United at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, the ‘Derby della Mole’ between Torino and Juventus in Serie A, the East Midlands clash between Derby County and Nottingham Forest in the Championship and Paris Saint Germain’s top of the table clash against OGC Nice in Ligue 1.

Shoot! looks at the five most shocking results from England’s top four leagues, as well as the major leagues in France, Spain, Italy and Germany…

5. Hertha Berlin 0-1 Werder Bremen

The days of Werder Bremen being feared by European opposition have long gone. Bremen’s last campaign in European club competition came in 2010 when they exited the Champions League at the play-off stages.

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin were in glistening form prior to kick-off. The hosts were in third place in the Bundesliga going into the game, only three points behind second placed Bayern Munich; who have won the last four league titles.

Max Kruse’s goal was enough for Bremen to capture the three points. The result was very much needed for the visitors as they went into the game only four points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place.

It was Berlin’s first league defeat since October, leaving them six points adrift of the top two in the Bundesliga table. It was also Berlin’s first loss at home all season.

A few years ago this result would have not been considered a shock. However, given the current climate, Bremen certainly shook up their in-form opposition.

4. Millwall 0-1 Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury looked destined for relegation not so long ago. However, their shock victory away at Millwall on Saturday means they are now level on points with 23rd placed side Chesterfield.

The Shrews may still be rock bottom of League One, but thanks to Louis Dodds’ goal they are now only two points off of escaping the relegation zone.

Millwall will be left very disappointed after knowing that a victory would have left them only one point off of the League One play-off places.

The hosts subsequently dropped from ninth to 12th in the table following the result.

3. Rotherham United 1-0 Queens Park Rangers

Managerless Rotherham’s shock win over ex-Premier League side Queens Park Rangers was certainly the biggest shock in the Football League this weekend.

It was only the hosts’ second league win this season. They had not won a game in their previous 15 league fixtures.

On loan Chelsea forward Izzy Brown got Rotherham’s goal midway through the first-half.

The result means that Ian Holloway‘s QPR side are only three points clear of relegation.

2. Leicester City 4-2 Manchester City

Three or four months ago, this would not have been a shock result at all. Current Premier League champions Leicester have really struggled to defend their crown so far.

Their victory over Pep Guardiola’s City side certainly stunned a lot of people. It was the hosts’ first league win in six matches.

Man City are currently fourth in the Premier League table and have now failed to win in their last three fixtures in all competitions.

Jamie Vardy’s hat-trick adds more misery to the City defence who have been heavily criticised this campaign. This has not been helped by regular injuries to City captain Vincent Kompany and the inconsistent form of new signings John Stones and Claudio Bravo.

The Foxes were in 16th position and only two points clear of the relegation zone going into this weekend’s fixtures.

Is this the turning point for the Foxes’ this season? Will they be able to recover their poor first-half of their league campaign?

Is Pep Guardiola’s managerial legacy finally being tested?

1. FC Ingolstadt 1-0 Red Bull Leipzig

Leipzig’s undefeated start to the season finally came to an end.

Their 1-0 defeat against bottom placed Ingolstadt was certainly not expected by the newly promoted side that hadn’t lost a Bundesliga game until Saturday afternoon.

Roger‘s goal for the hosts lifts them off the bottom of the Bundesliga table. It was only their second league win this season, with their only other win coming against Darmstadt.

Leipzig have dropped to second in the league. The Bundesliga debutants are still level on points with current champions Bayern Munich; who over took Leipzig in the league table following their 5-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg

A few months ago, this game would have been realistic to go either way. The two sides’ contrasting form this season made Leipzig huge favourites going into this one and the defeat has ended their immaculate record far this season.
