Liverpool have announced that they have completed the £4.7million signing of Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius on a long-term deal.

The 22-year-old completed a medical on Merseyside on Tuesday and will provide competition to current number one, Simon Mignolet, when he is officially registered on July 1, with the Reds’ back-up keeper Adam Bogdan failing to impress when called upon this term.

On signing on at Anfield, Karius, who kept nine clean sheets in the Germany’s top division this season, told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s a very good feeling and it’s an honour to play for a club like this.

“They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had been looking to get his transfer business done early after a disappointing campaign that ended up with an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League and a defeat in the Europa League final against Sevilla, and Karius joins another player who has already moved to Anfield from the Bundesliga this summer – Schalke defender Joel Matip.
