Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is reportedly subject to interest from Italian giants Roma.

The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the Serie A side’s top defensive targets this summer following the £20m sale of Alessio Romagnoli to AC Milan earlier this month.

Sakho, who arrived at Anfield in a deal worth £18m back in 2013 from Paris Saint-Germain, failed to score in 28 appearances in all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool last season.

With former Newcastle centre-half Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa looking increasingly likely to leave Roma for Lyon before the close of the transfer window, France international Sakho is the preferred replacement for the Stadio Olimpico outfit.

The defender was left out of the Red’s opening Premier League win at Stoke City on Sunday, although it is thought manager Rodgers still sees Sakho as part of his plans for the remainder of the campaign.
