Liverpool are considering a combined £40m raid on, surprise surprise, Southampton in January, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Merseysiders, who often favour a trip to the south coast when the transfer widow opens, are supposedly keen on defensive pair Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen.

The Netherlands international, who has played every minute of Premier League action for the Saints since his arrival last summer, has been the standout performer at St Mary’s this season and was crucial in keeping a clean sheet against Klopp’s side in the 0-0 draw on Saturday.

McQueen, on the other hand, only made his debut for the club in a 3-1 win over Burnley earlier this season. However, the converted winger who now sits in at left-back when called upon, has since made starts against Inter Milan and Man City, impressing on both occasions.

The youngster, who grew up as a Saints fan, is reportedly holding off on contract extension negotiations – with his current deal up at the end of this season – and Klopp feels that he could be the solution to the Reds’ issues in the left-back berth, where James Milner has been filling in this season.
