Liverpool step up pursuit of England defender

3CF8NE8 File photo dated 15-08-2025 of Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reiterated the club will only sign the right player for the right fee if he wants to join, but refused to be drawn on their position regarding Alexander Isak. Issue date: Thursday August 21, 2025.

Premier League champions Liverpool welcome league leaders Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds have been involved in two turbulent matches so far this season, first defeating Bournemouth 4-2 before a dramatic 3-2 win against Newcastle United last time out.

Arne Slot will hope to see his side improve defensively when they face the Gunners, with the Reds having surrendered two-goal leads in each of their two Premier League games so far this term.

Away from the action, however, it appears that the reigning champions are preparing to step up their pursuit of an England international.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool are set to push ahead with their attempts to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi prior to the end of the transfer window.

The report claims that the Merseyside giants are keen to assess the viability of a deal for the Englishman, before potentially moving on to alternative targets if they are unable to sign Guehi.

The centre-back joined Palace from Chelsea back in 2021 and has since established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

He has played a total of 160 times for the Eagles across all competitions, but the defender’s £50,000-per-week contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

It is claimed that Liverpool are set for new talks with Palace in an attempt to discover whether or not the South London side are willing to negotiate a deal for Guehi, 25.

Current Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is also in the final year of his contract and has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield next summer, reiterating the Reds’ need for defensive reinforcements.

Guehi has featured in all five of Palace’s matches so far this season.
