Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace.
Ismaila Sarr had put the Eagles in front at Selhurst Park, but Federico Chiesa looked to have rescued a point for the reigning Premier League champions with a late strike.
That was until former Arsenal man Eddie Nketiah restored the hosts’ lead, ending Liverpool’s flawless start to the new campaign.
In the wake of the game, it has emerged that Liverpool have been informed that one of their transfer targets will cost a significant amount.
According to Football Insider, Spanish side Atletico Madrid will demand a fee of around £100 million to allow Liverpool target Julian Alvarez to leave the club.
The Argentinian has emerged as a target for the Reds, who spent heavily during the recent transfer window and broke the British transfer record to land Alexander Isak.
Alvarez, 25, joined Atletico from Premier League side Manchester City back in 2024 and has since made 64 appearances for the Spanish side across all competitions.
He has scored 35 goals in that time, as well as registering nine assists for Diego Simeone’s side.
It is claimed that Liverpool were particularly interested in the forward prior to the arrival of Isak from Newcastle United, although the Argentina international remains of interest.
Alvarez is contracted to Atletico until the end of the 2029/30 campaign, and it appears that Atletico are desperate to keep hold of the player.
The ex-Man City man has established himself as a key player for Simeone’s side, featuring in all seven of their La Liga matches so far this term.
Alvarez scored twice as Atletico defeated rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in the Madrid derby on Saturday.
