Liverpool: Top 3 players of the Premier League season so far

Liverpool currently sit 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

With no top-flight football to be played until at least April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic, now is a good chance to look at the season so far.

Liverpool have had a sensational Premier League campaign to date, sitting 25 points ahead of Manchester City and just two wins away from their first top-flight title in 30 years.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have lost just one match all season – coming against Watford at the end of February – and have won 27 of their 29 matches.

Klopp has had a lot to smile about in this Premier League season.

Each member of the squad has played their part in this record-breaking campaign, but who have been the most important?

It’s been a tough decision but here’s Shoot’s top-three Liverpool players of the season so far…

3. Virgil van Dijk

It was a battle between Trent Alexander-Arnold and the big Dutchman for third place, but we’ve opted for VVD. Trent’s assists and attacking play from full-back has bordered on the unreal but without the towering centre-back marshalling the backline we feel the Reds wouldn’t be quite as comfortable as they are right now. As well has helping to keep goals out, the ex-Southampton star has also scored four league goals at the other end.

2. Sadio Mane

Although he spent some time on the sidelines, Sadio Mane has been absolutely vital to Jurgen Klopp. Although the Senegal international has scored two less (14) league goals than Mo Salah, the 27-year-old has scored more winners, most notably in matches against Norwich City, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, West Ham and Wolves. Mane, who also has seven assists in the top-flight, has proved a bargain buy since his £34million switch from Southampton in the summer of 2016.

1. Jordan Henderson

You might not agree but a team of superstars always needs a leader – that one player to do the leg-work and less applauded side of the game. After arriving from Sunderland in 2011, it took Jordan Henderson time to adapt to life at Anfield. But after captaining his side to a Champions League win last term, the England international is on the verge of doing the same in the Premier League. Consistent and reliable, the Reds have always performed better this term when the 29-year-old has played (he missed the defeat at Watford). Stats wise Hendo has played 25 times in the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
