England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been in contact with Milton Keynes Dons over their vacant managerial role, according to BBC Sport.

The 36-year-old, who won 114 international caps for his country, is set to leave Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy as of next month and is expected to retire from professional football if he lands the job with the League One outfit.

MK Dons currently sit 21st in the third-tier of English football following their latest 1-1 draw against Walsall.

They have been without a manager since Karl Robinson left by mutual consent last month.

Gerrard left Anfield in May 2015 after 17 years in The Reds’ first-team, making 710 appearances in all competitions, scoring 180 goals and providing 100 assists.

MK Dons, who travel to Bristol Rovers on Saturday, are understood to be exploring a number of candidates, with the Liverpool legend being one of them.

He was tipped to join Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff at Anfield following LA Galaxy’s Western Conference semi-final exit to the hands of Colorado Rapids.
