Liverpool will have the chance to finish second at Christmas should they beat rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby this evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s lost out on second place over the weekend following Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, but victory at Goodison Park tonight would leapfrog them back above Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Reds go into the game off the back of a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough in midweek, their first win of December, while Everton beat Arsenal 2-1 at home in their last Premier League outing.

It is sure to be a tough test for Liverpool, whose manager Klopp will be experiencing an away Merseyside derby for the first time since taking over at Anfield 14 months ago.

The Reds won 4-0 at home in the last derby, but it is sure to be a tougher test against the Toffees this evening given their excellent victory over Arsenal last time out.

Nonetheless, Liverpool will go into it as favourites given they are third in the Premier League, 11 points ahead of Ronald Koeman’s side, having won ten of their 16 league matches thus far.

In what has been a decent year for Liverpool, and what with Christmas fast approaching, we thought we’d take a look back at the calendar year, and we have selected their THREE best goals from 2016…

Philippe Coutinho vs Arsenal (August 14)

It was the opening day of the season, away at Arsenal, and when you need someone to step up and get your side off to the perfect start, it’s massive to have someone like Philippe Coutinho in your ranks.

The Brazilian international has been excellent for the Reds since he arrived at Anfield in 2013, and began this season in scintillating form by netting against the Gunners.

Klopp’s men were a goal down and looked set to go in at half time behind, yet Coutinho stepped up to curl home a brilliant free-kick from 35 yards in the first minute of stoppage time.

It helped inspire the visitors in the second half, as they completed a stunning 4-3 win at the Emirates, with Coutinho netting again in the second period alongside strikes from Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane.

Jordan Henderson vs Chelsea (September 16)

Chelsea have only lost twice in the Premier League this season, and one of those was at home to Liverpool back in September.

The Reds took the lead through Dejan Lovren’s header just 17 minutes into the contest, but it was their second, scored by captain Jordan Henderson, which was something special.

Not renowned for his goal-scoring exploits, the England midfielder picked the ball up from a Chelsea clearance, took a touch, and slotted it expertly into the top corner from almost 30 yards out, leaving Thibaut Courtois with absolutely no chance.

It was a stunning strike worthy of winning any game, and it turned out to be the winner for Liverpool that day.

Philippe Coutinho vs Manchester United (March 17)

Liverpool took a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their Europa League clash against Manchester United earlier in the year, but were put under the cosh when Anthony Martial netted from the spot at Old Trafford to reduce the home side’s arrears.

However, the Reds soon reasserted their authority on the tie when Philippe Coutinho produced a moment of individual brilliance to level proceedings just before the break.

The Brazilian playmaker picked the ball up on the left, left defender Guillermo Varela for dead, and then excellently dinked the ball over the on-rushing David de Gea.

It was a sensational goal from a sensational player.
